Wednesday's Duane Allman Pic

duanegreggbeach450.jpg
Greetings from Daytona Beach!
Young Duane poses happily with the presumptive granma while his brother apparently continues to feel queasy even after his chum call from the Sky Lift.
Wail on, Sky Dog!

CITIZEN'S ARREST!! CITIZEN'S ARREST!! Yes sir officer. I caught these 2. I don't know what they were doing but they look like they're up to no good. Older one kept mutterin' about whaling on. I told him they were dolphins.

Willard...her name must be Thelma Lou! That is so funny! I wonder if this is maternal or faternal. If faternal...Duane must have looked like his Dad cause Lil' Bro looks nothing like Granny, except for the baby fat;)and the lovely swimwear. Thanks for the link Donnah. Those post cards are way cool. Duane looks like such a nice boy in this picture. Before rock n roll got his soul and turned him into our beloved Skydog. Or maybe he was just playing nice to the camera until he could get back to his high jinx. More than likely....the latter.

Thank you Donnah ( and the friend who forwarded).

Wail on, Skydog!

Duane looks a little bit like Malcolm in the Middle. I kept feeling like he was reminding me of someone & I think that's who it is. Great pic Donnah! Thanks!

Funny stuff there Willard!

Probably on their best behavior for Nana. That's the effect nanas usually have on nice kids. The really rotten ones act even worse, because their nanas are the kind who see no evil, hear no evil, believe no evil. lol
This pic makes me want to rub zinc oxide on somebody's nose.
I know I'm in trouble when I start getting maternal feelings.

What a wonderful world the beaches of Florida were then.. reminds me of camping on Cocoa, waiting for the rockets to go up.

Posted by: csason at February 25, 2009 10:11 PM

Duane doesn't appear to be much taller than gregg here.must have been a late bloomer

Posted by: Baron Thoma at February 25, 2009 11:16 PM

Duane looks like a sweet and kind little boy,,, He looks so cute! Boy next door look.

Poor Duane had to fill in as the father figure for bro Gregg. I bet he had to grow up pretty fast. Such a big job for such a little boy!

Wail on skydogers, wail on!

Posted by: rememberingduane at February 26, 2009 12:11 AM

He must have done a helluva job RD cuz I think Gregg has done very well for himself. :)

Posted by: Lisa at February 27, 2009 02:35 PM

And not just Gregg. Duane was by all accounts a good influence on his brother bandmates and friends.

Listen to Butch five years ago, in a letter to the NY Times posted right here on Florida Cracker: "First, let me state unequivocally that Duane Allman was one of the most powerful, charismatic and trustworthy men I have ever known. I would use the word 'messianic' to describe the impact he had on the people around him... He was a man of the highest character and principles."

Posted by: MJAlfie at February 27, 2009 05:04 PM

Do you know how hard it is to be a good influence on people without putting a damper on their fun and ending up having them resenting the hell out of you? Anybody that can do the former without doing the latter has definitely earned every bit of praise he gets.

Posted by: Starla Darling at February 27, 2009 05:22 PM

Yes, it's a gift. People need to believe in you even when they get mad at you. Duane made people mad, I'm sure, but they fell into line behind him because they felt he was headed in the right direction. And when he was gone, they must have felt totally lost-- for awhile at least.

Posted by: MJAlfie at February 27, 2009 05:36 PM

I know poor Berry felt that way. I don't think he ever recovered from losing Duane.

Posted by: Lisa at February 27, 2009 06:11 PM

It is possible to be a messiah and a scoundrel..

Look..There's one right there..with his granny and
brother !

Ok, Now I know everyone isnt such a fan of the present ABB, but I sure am! Donna check out the link here, for a picture you might use. http://www.glidemagazine.com/hiddentrack/interview-catching-up-with-butch-trucks/

There is a recent interview with Butch about the Moogis project. The annual Beacon run will be available live online this year for a fee.

Because this is the 40th anniversary of The Allman Brothers Band; this year's run is dedicated to Duane. I cannot wait...(If you are as big as fan as me (remember the ABB was and still is a creation of Duane Allman, I sure he'd be proud its still rockin after 40 year! After all they have been through its a miracle!)

Here is a excerpt from Butch's interview borrowed from Glide Magazine
:
HT: Now, these special guests. Without giving too much away, though you’re certainly invited to do so if you’d like, will you be playing primarily their songs, having them play Allman Brothers Band songs, or a little of both?

BT: We’re going to do both. We did a couple weeks of rehearsal and that time was spent doing 20 to 30 songs of the people we’re going to play with. What we’re trying to do with everyone that’s coming is play a couple of their songs and then have them sit in on a couple of our songs. We just got a DVD of a montage of photos of Duane, too. As you may know we’re dedicating all 15 shows to Duane - he put the fire into this and taught us a bit about life and how to live it, and we kept it going. But without Duane, this doesn’t happen. Without Duane, things like ‘Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs’ doesn’t happen, and Clapton himself has said so. Duane walked into that session, took good music and stuff rolling around, and set fire to it. He had that ability.

So we thought about it and over the past year we realized the only thing we’ve ever done officially is dedicate ‘Eat a Peach’ to a brother. So it’s about damn time we do something like this - Duane was a very special part of the American musical scene and he made a huge impact. We’re going to celebrate that. And yes, we have invited a lot of the people that he knew and he played with, and a lot of the people that came later and were influenced by what Duane did. Some of those, too, were out of the jazz field, which blows us away because that’s kind of what he tried to do. If the Allman Brothers Band did anything unique, I think it’s that we took rock and roll and added a piece of Miles Davis and John Coltrane and Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea and shoved things in their direction.

Please note: After this year ABB will trim their touring schedule down alot. Most of the band have other obligations, so this is the year to see them.

My personal opinion is, if you love Duane and i know y'all do, you will really support them this year!

Rock on and have you a good time Duaneheads!

And there, folks, is Butch Trucks, Master of the Tease. He managed to drop a ton of tantalizing hints, but he did not mention one single name who is actually going to be playing with them. Very artful.
(Butch was probably the kind of kid who delighted in "I know something you don't know, dah-dah-dee-dah!")

That beach scene is looking more and more attractive to me every minute. We got at least six inches of snow here, hard to tell with the wind, and it's still coming down. It slowed up for a little while but now it's falling hard.
So, maybe Nana would like to take a break and go do something else and I can take over watching the boys for her? Sit in the sun and read and let them play nearby. As long as they don't try to bury each other or put sand in somebody's Pepsi.

**Musical update**
Got An Anthology cd album finally, and fallen in love with it! I love the sweet slide work, and Im really getting into the acoustic stuff. I already figured out the basics of Mean Old World on my tri-cone, but I REALLY like Please Be With Me.

I've gotten a hold of my uncles dobro and for one main purpose; to learn Please Be With Me and move on to more nice, easy country blues to expand my horizons... (tho uncle wants me to play it in bluegrass band... yuck, I dont like bluegrass.. but we'll see..)
And I've learned most of it. Just gotta tighten it up, maybe get him to play the rhythm or somethin... whenever I get something recorded I'll put it on youtube and post a link =)
Im also working on some of my favorite leads of Duanes, not only per note, but per Duanes awesome tone (lacking in everyone elses cover leads on youtube)

All I can do is keep at it, and never give up! B)

Posted by: Ben at March 2, 2009 08:59 PM

yeah Ben, that Cowboy song is killer! As you can see Duane could play a pretty mean country fried slide guitar. Play all the music you can Ben, it will open doors for you what ever you play. You are really woodshedding lately and it shows.!! Very proud of your progress, you would make Duane proud. He loved teaching people and he still is every time someone new learns one of his licks!!!
Wail on Ben, Wail on...and everyone else that has a notion too!

On a sadder note, i may have to sell my moogis subscription and NOT be able to see those Beacon shows.. For the last week i havent been able to acess the archived video feeds. none of our computers in the house will. We had to move due to the destruction of our doublewide by Hurricane Ike and live in a community with no dsl or cable. Got Hughesnet and it stinks. They have limited band width 300 meg. Funny thing is i can download everything but paid for music and video. The free stuff works fine. Anyone got an ideas please post them? Help will be appreciated!!! Been looking forward to this thing all winter!
Im calling HN and contacted Moogis and waiting for answers. I may have to go up to the elite class but dang its $119.00 a month. Paying $85 for 1.7 service. When we had att dsl it was 21.99 a month with no liimits.. If i drank beer I would cry in it!!!!!

Ben, this is for you! Scott Boyer from Cowboy playing Please be with me 2 years ago. You can watch the slide action. He wrote the song and played it with Duane back in 71 in Muscle Shoals studio when they were making the original lp.

Wail on everyone, wail on!

Posted by: rememberingduane at March 3, 2009 01:51 AM

Oooo Ben, one of, if not my very, very favorite!! You ain't kidding about "Please Be With Me". You know there was another take that is said to be even better, but Duane had a "nose full" and you could hear him sniffing. I love hearing him talk about the fast ball on that song. I want to hear the other take but can't find it anywhere. Let us know when you have it up....can't wait to hear it.

Wail on, Ben...making Skydog proud!

Posted by: cindy at March 3, 2009 12:12 PM

Duane up all! His daughter Gadridrille, cant spell her name, is going to be at ALL 14 BEACON SHOWS!!!

GOT MANY PEOPLE WORKING ON MY CONNECT PROBLEM, STILL HOPING TO BE ABLE TO SEE THE BEACON RUN...

Cindy, you might try youtube. there are several versions listed there.

check this out..for cool info..hes says it much better than i.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EPd6h235Nus

Posted by: rememberingduane at March 3, 2009 08:24 PM

Could this be the first take that you're lookin for???
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fKgCtpVV_9I&feature=related

Its def Cowboy, and its def a different take than the finished take. Perhaps they got this off the Dreams Box Set (heard the orig 'sniffle' take was on that one)

And I've tightened it up a bit, but daaaang I like the slide work on this other version here. Its stellar! Just wish the dobro came through louder and clearer.

Posted by: Ben at March 3, 2009 10:26 PM

Ben, I don't know it may be...it is different than the anthology version...can't hear any "sniffing" but this maybe it. There is not a version of this song on the Dreams box set. I have that and it's not on there. I wish they would do a reissue on the Cowboy album 5'll Getcha Ten. I would buy that in a heartbeat.I love, love, love this song. Don't know that I would love it as much if our beloved Duane wasn't on it but anyways.......love it. Keep us posted on your progress Ben and thanks for the link!

Where do you keep finding these wonderful pictures? Are there any pictures of Duane with his then baby daughter Galadrielle? I've never seen one.

Posted by: Steven at March 4, 2009 03:48 PM

cindy, check ebay or half.com for cowboy lps. Amazon.com has it sometimes.

Steven, the closest I have found is Duane holding a rattle and a cake with his girlfriend/wife.

If you havent seen it..its here, you gotta page down a little. http://robertoreg.blogspot.com/2005_03_20_archive.html
Donnah check out the ABB site there is a new pic posted on Duane you might use.

And Donnah heres a really young Duane with the Loundermilk. http://www.indyweek.com/pdf/090507/Loudermilk_DuaneAllman.jpg

Wail on, y'all!

Posted by: rememberingduane at March 4, 2009 08:08 PM

Thanks for the link to the pic of Skydog (looks like he was Skypuppy then!) and John D. Yeah, I've seen the pic of Duane holding the rattle, but it's kinda strange that even a free spirit like Duane, in spite of not really being there for his daughter wouldn't be photographed with her. There's gotta be one somewhere! In the meantime, this will always be my favorite Duane lounge! Wail on, Skydog!
