Two unlikely products of a military school.
Wail on, Skydog!
HAH! Neat, I've never seen them dressed up for their school like that.
Oh, and I did up a vid for a good lead B)

Still tweaking on Please Be With Me, tho.
Posted by: Ben at March 4, 2009 09:40 PMIt all makes sense now. Gregg's hat was too small. Squished his brains all in.....
Posted by: mike the bike at March 4, 2009 11:23 PMlol!
Of course, a more charitable soul than you might have said the hat compressed and concentrated his brains rather than squished them in. :)
Do you notice that Duane always seems to be smiling as a little boy and lil' bro always seems miserable. Maybe that's why Duane sang songs like "Happily Married Man" and lil' bro could sing the blues so well. OK Starla...you are our resident psychologist...do your thing. Wonder who the Little Old Lady is? Another Granny or an employee of the school? DA looks like a cutie patootee in this shot.
Thanks Donnah, we are indebted to you for the joy you bring us every Wednesday!
Wail on, Skydog!
Posted by: cindy at March 5, 2009 10:15 AMI noticed that too, that Gregg always looks like the camera caught him in a bad mood or else he just plain wants to be someplace else when picture-taking time rolled around. Or maybe he is feeling picked on and put upon, probably by his very own big brother. Show me a pair of siblings who don't make each other miserable at least part of the time and I'll show you a pair of siblings that don't spend much time together.
Don't know about the old lady. Maybe she's the one who made the hats and she made Gregg's too tight and that's why he looks like that.
Or maybe Starla's mind has become unhinged due to extreme cold and a flu bug. Take your pick.
I read somewhere that she's their "Granny Daniels". Would that be their maternal grandma I'm assuming? I've never heard what their mother's maiden name was. Not sure how reliable that is though.
Posted by: Lisa at March 5, 2009 12:32 PMHello? Is this thing on? *tap* *tap*
Where'd everybody go today?
Starla? Can you come out & play? Or are you grounded?
Posted by: Lisa at March 5, 2009 05:34 PMNah, I'm not grounded. To paraphrase Patrick Swayze in Dirty Dancing, "Nobody puts Starla on restriction!" ::
Just getting over a gross 48-hour bug thing I picked up somehow. Which I picked up right after we dug out from a big snowstorm. I know I'm not as far south as most of y'all, but we here on Delmarva don't usually get that much snow. Had about 8 inches, I think. And cold! But now we're thawing out fast.
Finally got to eat some real grown-up-person food for supper, after two days of Jello (Jello is pointless without whip cream; I love me some whip cream) and Ritz crackers.
So never fear, Starla is well on the mend.
And yes, this is a great pic. Don't they look spiffy?
Sorry you're feeling sick Starla. If I'd have known you were still sick I wouldn't have bothered you. Glad your on the mend. I actually made it through a winter without almost dying for once. I'm so glad spring is on the way!!! We didn't get all that snow here in Illinois but I'm still very tired of winter.
Thanks for coming out to play anyway Starla & I'll let you get your rest.
Duane's as cute as a bug's ear in that picture!
Posted by: Lisa at March 5, 2009 06:24 PMOh, that's fine, I'm dying of cabin fever and am so rested up it's disgusting.
I've heard tales of Illinois winters. Dark, howling tales with bitter black winds and snow blown hard and cruel as driven sand in Arabian Nights...dull gray afternoons where people huddle in their chilly homes, guzzling beer and snarking at each other till somebody snaps and brings out a meat cleaver... *insert hellish laughter here*
And my time down wasn't entirely wasted (insert favorite "wasted" joke here; it is Duane's board, after all) I finally finished both "Misery" and "The Perfect Storm." As you could maybe tell from my previous paragraph, both have fired my fevered little imagination.
And honey, the most adorable bug's ear can't hold a candle to a certain party pictured above... siddown Gregg, I wasn't talking about you.
Poor ole Gregg. It's as if someone told him chicks go for guys in uniform and he thinks this is as good as it gets. Duane however is as cool as a cucumber. Hat back, "Relax baby bro, it'll get better! I hear they're workin' on this stuff called tie-dye. We'll be stylin' 'for you know it! Wax off, Wail on!
Posted by: Willard at March 5, 2009 10:31 PMI think Duane must have had a lot of fun being Duane, and Gregg just never could figure that out.
Posted by: csason at March 6, 2009 12:35 AMI've always wondered how it came about that Gregg got to be "the cute one." Don't get me wrong, he is cute... but Duane's cuter.
The only thing I came up with was, Gregg was The Singer, and I guess that upped his Cuteness Factor for enough people.
But, as Deniece Williams says:
And maybe, he sings off-key,
But that's all right by meeeeee...
Yes, the old salami in the pants and put him out front syndrome. I don't know if it was that, he was/is the singer or maybe we are being a little too harsh. Maybe he was/is shy and without big bro' to do the communicating, he just couldn't cope. Nah, we all know is is an *ss!
csason you have hit the old nail on the head....Duane liked Duane and Gregg didn't like Gregg so much. Starla, are we right? And I am glad you are feeling better. That crap hit everybody in my house week before last. Of course I, being the wife and mom, didn't get to go to bed....darn it! I had to take care of the guys, who we all know are dying and sicker that anybody in the history of the world has been.;) Sorry fellas, you know it's true!
Wail on, Brothers and Sisters!
Posted by: cindy at March 6, 2009 09:52 AMPlus Gregg had the HAIR. His was always so long & thick & blonde. Duane's was a bit thinner & not usually as long and a little messed up at times. Mainly cuz he messed it up when he was getting DOWN!!
But I don't care about hair. I've never had a problem with Duane's hair. All the way to the tip of those sweet mutton chops!
Has anybody noticed how that guitar player in the Muppets band looks kinda like Duane? Mutton chops & all. The only thing is I think he's the bass player of the band. Not sure.
And Starla, the winters in Illinois can be pretty grueling but the only part that I relate to may be the dull gray aftrenoons & the beer guzzling thing!:D Actually we've gotten a pretty good amount of snow this year. I hate winter.
Posted by: Lisa at March 6, 2009 12:05 PMJust to clarify - I didn't mean to imply that Duane looked like a Muppet. Doh. I just meant it was as if he was modeled after Duane, which I hold in high regard.
Posted by: Lisa at March 6, 2009 12:24 PMDr. Starla, Pop (and Rock, and Country) Psychologist: With men, it's usually one extreme or the other, and you sometimes see both in the same man at different times. If he gets a splinter in his fingernail, he acts like his arm got shredded ina wood chipper. If his appendix bursts, he stumbles around saying it's just some bad Buffalo Wings.
And lisa, credit where it's due: Gregg did have shampoo commercial hair.
But no matter. I'll packa couple different bottles of shampoo and conditioner in the Swamp Bag, we'll see what kind of headway I make.
Anybody going to the show on Monday? Anybody want to meet for drinks?
Posted by: Mike The Bike at March 6, 2009 03:17 PMYa'll know anything about our Canadian winters? (Where's Robbie Robertson when we need him?)
Anyway, one thing that made Duane so cool was his total confidence. The last two Wednesdays, we have photographic evidence that it was there all along!
Wail on, Skydog!
Posted by: MJAlfie at March 6, 2009 03:54 PMI've heard tales of Canadian winters too. I heard it's pitch black night for weeks at a time, and the polar bears might try and come indoors to get warm. :)
Posted by: Starla Darling at March 6, 2009 04:07 PMWish I was Mike....have yourself a real good time! Maybe Dicky will show up....just for you! They are celebrating Duane this run....about damn time!! That is the one and only reason the Cat in the Hat would show......it's called RESPECT.
Sorry Donnah, this week I have been a real gutter mouth. I will write 100 times...."I will respect Florida Cracker Duane Allman Wednesdays" and will forward to you.
Posted by: cindy at March 6, 2009 04:32 PMI think both of the Allman brother's were/are extremely talented musicians. Gregg is responsible, in my opinion, for playing a more than essential, possibly the starting role in a whole genre of music that became known as Southern Rock. From that
genre, an entire fleet of 'new country' songs came into being..
Sure, some of the other players were set and ready, and in a few cases, cutting their own 'row'..but..
It was off of songs like Whipping Post, It's Not my Cross to Bear, Black Hearted Woman, Dreams, that we now have the Traviss Tritt's of the world.
Some say it was the Allman Brother's that reclaimed rock back from the British invasion, and if so that speaks mounds to Gregg's abilities.
As far as him an Duane as kids..I have TWO older brother's, and one of them is named Duane, so I can relate a bit to him.. Cindy, I don't know about Gregg not liking himself any more than most anyone else..in fact, he seems to like himself just fine.
But it's pretty obvious little Skydog cast a very big shadow at times. In this photo, it looks like
something may have occurred just prior to the picture being taken, and Gregg got chewed out by that sweet little old angel in between these two heathens... THAT'S what I see on his face.
Possibly got chewed out for something he did at Big Brother's encouragement, and/or with his participation, and Little Brother is feeling like "It wasn't JUST me, why am I taking the rap?!"
Posted by: Starla Darling at March 7, 2009 11:05 AMI don't know how I ended up on this site but lemme tell ya:
You got your music all right and your politics all completely, totally, ass-backward wrong.
Get a fucking clue.
Posted by: The Fool at March 9, 2009 01:24 AMSo..........ahem.........pardon me for staying somewhat on topic.....
I'm going to the Beacon on the 9th (tonight), 12th, 20th, 23rd, and 24th. Anybody else going?
Posted by: Mike The Bike at March 9, 2009 03:38 PMMike how was the show? Bet it was a good'n! Hope you had yourself a real good time.
What the heck happened this week? Newbies comin' in and reaking havock.......Oh my!:O
Posted by: cindy at March 10, 2009 10:07 AMThe show was great. Taj Mahal did three tunes at the end of the first set, ending with Statesboro Blues. The Levon Helm Band started the second set with three songs including The Weight (also with Taj). Some of the other highlites for me were Walk on Gilded Splinters, Black Hearted Woman, Mountain Jam, and Stormy Monday.
Going again on Thursday.
Posted by: Mike The Bike at March 10, 2009 01:01 PMWow,the show was great..they opened with pictures of Duane on the screen and Warren and Derek in lights playing electric version of little Martha..brought tears to my eyes! You could tell by the look on everyone's faces in the band that this Beacon run is special! They are having a ball and it shows. They did Mountain jam with so much soul and invention! Levon Helm was there with Taj and many others.
And no I didnt leave my house, but had the "best seat in the house!" Better than front row for sure..Paid $100.00 to see all the shows on Moogis. The cameras are set up so close you feel like your standing on stage in front of the band. Its like you could touch them!!! When the show opened with pictures of Duane on the wall behind the guys I cried like a baby!
No Hughesnet still sucks and is incompatiable with Moogis, its not Moogis's fault. They had a team of tech working on my problem for days. It is Hughesnet problem, not theirs.
I went ahead and bought a sprint aircard and can see all the shows now. (I dont know how im going to pay for sprint with the Hughesnet being so expensive but I have to see those shows!)
Mike the bike you may be there in person, but I got a better seat than you even if you got a front row seat. Feeding it though the HD and it streaming at 1000 kbs...it rocks! Live concert feeds are great and no parking fees, taxis, or weather etc problems!!! And i get so see all 14 shows!
Butch kudos to you and all you have done to bring this to your fans!!!!! Duane would be sooo very proud...and Gregg sounds sooo great!! They all did. Cant wait to see the rest of the shows!!!
Rock on and have you a good time...
Posted by: rememberingduane at March 10, 2009 04:50 PMAWWWW I wish I could be there!!!
Do you think they're at least gonna make a big dvd of everything??? THEY BETTER!!!
Ben, me too, i wish i could share my moogis...with ya.
Well, im proud of the progress you have made on the guitar! You sound great!!! So you're still digging those authentic Duane tones with those WCR pups! Rock on Ben and have you a good time!
Keep the Duane flame alive!!!! :>
Johnny winter from Beaumont, Tx just got done playing on stage with ABB. (I live in Beaumont area)at the Beacon tonight.
Posted by: rememberingduane at March 10, 2009 09:35 PMRd's having such a good time, it makes me a little jealous. (You don't mind being called RD do ya?)
But I'm very happy to know you're enjoying it so much.
And so nice that the Moogis people have been so helpful to you in trying to solve your computer/access problems.
Starla if I could I would share my Moogis with all of ya!!!!
Gregg played an acoustic Gibson tonight on Mellisa and wore a guitar strap like Duane's. In fact it probably was his! Hes singing great and the cameras get right up on their faces and they guitars when they play. Los Lobos joined them too tonight. I must say that Derek has been burning on the two shows i have seen so far!!! He played one solo that sounded as close to Duane as one could get. They certainly have the fire in them still!
Its a miracle really for me. like I said before Starla, I have had tickets in hand before many times and something always happened and I couldnt go. Now financially I couldnt afford to go to NYC to the Beacon for even 1 show. Also because of my disability it wouldnt be possible to go anyway. With Moogis I get to see them all.
They showed pictures of Duane on the big screen on the beginning of the concert and the end.
Never seen Butch so animated on stage before! This is good stuff. Butch says its up to the band if they wanna release a box set of dvds. It will be serveral mos if they do..I would definitely buy it!
Cool thing is, the concerts r recorded on Moogis so you can watch them anytime you like if you are a subscriber!
Starla Rd is great...one day when one of us is rich, and not neccessarily famous; maybe they will haul us up to the Beacon to have a Duanehead party and the the Beacon run!
Till then Wail on, everyone Wail on!!! Duane's daughter is at the show everynight, but havent seen her on stage.
Posted by: rememberingduane at March 10, 2009 11:52 PMHad a horrible thought re: the daughter not being onstage.
What if she's the only member of her family that cannot carry a tune if it had handles and a shoulder strap?! How awful!
The discipline of military school probably payed off double in the tightness of the band.
Posted by: Paco Maco at March 11, 2009 09:57 AMStarla, your forgetting that Duane wasnt much of a singer!!! Hes got a load of soul but no chops when it came to singing!!! Loved his vocals anyway especially goin down slow...I think thats the name.. His daughter seems to shun the limelight. She is not in the music biz but its soo cool she is there for her dad everynight!
Yeah, Paco you are most likely right in the discipine dept.
If you are familar with ABB history/and or read Skydog or the Allman brothers story. You will probably notice that when Duane was alive, Gregg depended on his big brother for everything. He didnt seem capable of goin forward with the band after Duane's passing. He was devestated and literally unable to function for a while. So we have to give credit to Gregg for roundin up the strengh to continue with the band after that tragic loss. The ability of Gregg to keep the band together was a lifeline for all the brothers and many might not of survived without the community know as the ABB.
There is a new movie coming out on March 16 about the Big house. I gotta get that..watch this preview here...http://www.pleasecallhomethemovie.com/
It looks like a must have for all us Duaniacs!
Wail on sister and brothers, wail on!
Posted by: rememberingduane at March 11, 2009 11:15 AMI ordered that Big House Movie & should be getting it this week. I can't wait to watch it! I also ordered an ABB baby onesy cuz I'm gonna be grandma in August. I'm officially old now. ;)
Posted by: Lisa at March 11, 2009 11:39 AMLisa thats supercool! Gonna have a litle Duaniac grandbaby! :> Were not old, were aged, mellowed and valuable! lol
Posted by: rememberingduane at March 11, 2009 06:17 PMRD, I can confirm all you saw on Moogis 'cause I was there last night in the flesh. What a show! I would've LOVED to have seen Levon too in the previous show, but hey, with Johnny Winter and Los Lobos, I'm not complaining.
The photo show with Duane images was awesome. And agreed, Derek is one of the wonders of the musical world.
If I had HDTV and a computer of my own, I'd spring for Moogis myself.
Posted by: MJAlfie at March 11, 2009 06:47 PMBut... what about me? Unaged, unmellowed, unripened?
Congrats Lisa. And congrats on finding a onesy that will be a refreshing change from all the princess and pirate motifs you see so much of.
One more thing: I'm actually jealous of ya, RD, since you can see every show, not just one. I could have lived without a couple of the drunks in front of me, too. Still, sharing the same breathing space with this legendary band ... just great
Posted by: MJAlfie at March 11, 2009 06:50 PMOne more thing: I'm actually jealous of ya, RD, since you can see every show, not just one. I could have lived without a couple of the drunks in front of me, too. Still, sharing the same breathing space with this legendary band ... just great
Posted by: MJAlfie at March 11, 2009 06:50 PMNah, to be honest Id trade the moogis thing in for some tickets to see them live, but even if I had tickets I couldnt go. Too expensive and I dont travel anymore. I would have no idea how to travel in my wheelchair. I wouldnt be able to see a thing with everyone standing up...lol
I used to be about 5/5 before the dog tripped me off the porch and messed up my legs...kinda short even for a gal like me in this day in age.
But in a chair, Im really short...gets old looking up at everyone...
Get medicare April 1,(been waiting two long years for the privilege. if you're under 62 on disability you got to wait that long) hopin someone can get me at least limping along.. my butts getting to wide sitting all the time...lmao...
Rock on young-uns and old-uns too, and have a good time! I may not be about to walk but I still know how to rock and "roll" :> with ABB..and Duane of course too! :>
Wail on skydog...you enjoying the shows?
Posted by: rememberingduane at March 12, 2009 03:38 AMStarla, I bet you cant wait to get the first grey hair? Dont worry dear, you will get there eventually...the choice is obvious! To grey or not to grey...thats not the question...where in the hell did i put the remote??? :>
No, my minds ok...its my sense of humor thats off. but, Ive been like that my whole life!
Everyone wail on and have a great time!
Posted by: rememberingduane at March 12, 2009 03:44 AMWhen it comes to going gray, ethnicity and genetics appears to be firmly on my side, so ha ha ha. lol
