A skinny Duane backstage at what is probably a university gym. Venue unknown.
Wail on, Skydog!
Cool. Going to the show tomorrow. I hear that it's Boz Scaggs.......
Posted by: Mike The Bike at March 12, 2009 01:16 AMMike enjoy!
Gregg sounds the best he has sounded in years. Cant wait. Moogis to me is better than being there. The camera work is excellent. Its like setting in with them, sittin in my living room in Woodville Texas. I can even see the sweat drippin off them! Little things like Warren throwing a guitar pick into the audience. Hope you get to catch one.
Except my excessive bandwidth is goin to kill me!!!!
Rock on and have you a good time at the Beacon!
Will somebody get that boy a freedom fry.
Posted by: Paco Maco at March 12, 2009 08:28 AMA "skinny Duane?" That's like saying a "blue Cookie Monster" or an "annoying Dr. Phil."
By Freedom Fry, are you referring to what many of us stubborn types still call French fries?
If so, then I'll contribute a double cheeseburger and some of my cookies, and Lisa can throw in her milkshake.
Not thorw it like THAT, Lisa. Jeez. Can't take you anywhere, can we?
Wait, I've seen Duane in that jacket Gregg's got on. He's wearing it on the cover of Randy Poe's Skydog book, no? They seem to have worn each other's clothes regularly, just like other bros.
Posted by: MJAlfie at March 12, 2009 10:07 AMOK this is a really good shot because it can answer the question of how tall Duane was. Looks like he an lil' bro' were about the same height....so we can assume he would have been a little over 6 ft. They are both slouching in this pic and as pointed put by MJAlfie wore each others clothes so I am going to go with the same height as Gregg.
Lisa and Starla, you know that DA liked some beans, taters and fried chicken better than the burger and fries. Mama H didn't cook burgers. But they were regularly seen at the Waffle House so I guess a burger and french/freedom fries would be an appropriate choice. Oh no, we have fallen back to the "I want to feed him and clean him up" discusson.
Thank you Donnah, a good hump day pick-me-up from the Skydog Queen! Mike have a good time tommorrow night. Everybody have a good weekend, but most of all....
Wail on, Skydog!
Posted by: cindy at March 12, 2009 12:46 PMStarla, I only throw Milkshakes to show my love. *Duane ducks & says wtf?!!* :)
Posted by: Lisa at March 12, 2009 04:28 PMWell, just who do you love, now that I've got strawberry shake all down the front of me?
WTF indeed! lol
lol Starla! Sorry about that. And thanks for the Congrats about me being grandma. I didn't even realize there were any more comments to last weeks Duane pic til I just went back & saw them.
I've always told my kids that I want my grandkids to call me "Grammy" cuz I would like to be referred to as a major award. They usually just smile & hand me my straight jacket. :D
Great pic this week by the way Donnah. I wonder what them two were up to in there?
Posted by: Lisa at March 12, 2009 05:08 PMUp to no good, most likely.
I don't want kids, let alone grandkids, but if by some mischance I wound up with them, I think I'd want the grandkids to call me Big Mama. So they don't forget who's the Boss. lol
Might be out of your hands though, once the little one starts talking he may just come up with his own name for you.
My Dustin and his brothers and sister all called their grandmother Company, pronounced in the country way: Cumpny.
Because whenever she'd visit, their mom would say "Y'all need to be on your best behavior, Company's coming!"
*swipes at milkshake dripping down neck* Oh well, strawberries are supposed to be good for the complexion.
Holy cow, what a show! Warren and Derek with jazz licks and chords, Warren sounding alot like Santana..playing and singing- whose been talkin. That liquid sustain going strong.
Derek wearin a hoodoo man junior wells white t shirt...and Gregg looking and sounding cool with his blonde hair down for a change.
Buddy Guy came on stage without his famous pokadot strat...played a creme colored strat.. Played several tunes including The sky is crying - with Warren singing vocals. Nothing like triple harmony guitar leads! Derek grinning ear to ear watchin Buddy play!
I dont know much about Trey Anastasio and his keyboard player and some other guy. His Ibanez looked out of place with all the Gibsons and Fender guitars.
So many people on stage..it was full but sounded great...Derek grinning ear to ear as Buddy Guy was wailing up and down the keyboard..playing recorded Duane solos from Dreams on one of their breaks..Dont know who else will show up tonight...cool not to know...on the edge of your seat wondering.who...?
Thats all for now, there are interviewing fans at the Beacon...boy so many of us go back to the beginning...and lots of 30 somethings too.
Rock on World and have you a good time!

Posted by: rememberingduane at March 12, 2009 10:38 PMRD, I now officially christen you Florida Cracker's Very Own Spunky Girl Reporter!
Oh my god, I think I want to write a song by that title, to the tune of "Funky Cold Medina."
I need to go to bed!
You go Starla, that would b killer!
How could you be called Big Mama, when you are under 5 foot tall? y'all would get those little chillin all mixed up for sure! lol
Posted by: rememberingduane at March 12, 2009 11:50 PMWhat a show. It was electric in there......
Posted by: mike the bike at March 13, 2009 01:24 AMMike I know, I felt the buzz from 1600 miles away!!!! My computers still smokin!
Posted by: rememberingduane at March 13, 2009 03:34 AMRD, for at least the first ten years of their life, I would be much taller than any grandchildren. And by the time they got bigger than me, my big Presence would be firmly cemented and they wouldn't dare think of me as little. lol
Posted by: Starla Darling at March 13, 2009 08:04 AMSure would be more than awesome if Dickey showed up at the Beacon - especially on the 26th. Mainly because this Beacon run is supposed to be dedicated in honor of Duane. It's a shame really. Duane would hate it that he wasn't there or wasn't invited or whatever the case may be.
Posted by: Lisa at March 13, 2009 02:45 PMNot going to happen. He was in NYC on the 8th, and had no show on the 9th. If it was going to happen, it probably would have been then......
Posted by: Mike The Bike at March 13, 2009 02:54 PMRD, this one's for you, from DJ Starla Starzz:
Here on the net in Cracker Land, we got all different folks:
Gearheads, poets, flirts, and them that's full of jokes.
We'll all get wrote about some day, by anybody, not just me,
But today I wanna sing the praises of one gal named RD.
She lives way down in Texas, just above the border,
And this here week she has become our Spunky Girl Reporter.
See, for the first time in memory, she's caught the Beacon Run!
And though it's on the Internet, she's havin' loads of fun.
Every night she's on this site, catchin all the action.
And comes on here and fills our ears with such a joyful passion.
She got a front row seat, and don't have to leave her house,
No parking paid, no travel made, no beer spilled on her blouse.
She watches every set, each song, each special guest.
And when the show is finished, she comes round here and tells us all the best.
Now Mike he sees it live, but his time on here is shorter,
So when what we want is all the dope we need our Spunky Girl Reporter.
Every Wednesday, come sun, come wind, come rain,
Donnah puts up some real hot pics, this fellow named Duane.
Us girls get all swoony, want to fix his hair.
The boys get sorta jealous, think we're way out there.
So they talk real loud bout Fenders, Gibsons, and somethin' called an amp.
Well, I'm here to tell ya, RD's an all-round champ!
She knows her axes, knows em inside out.
When gear-talk's goin on, she knows what it's about.
But also she knows that sometimes girl-talk is the rule.
She can gush and giggle with the worst of us,
Bout tight jeans, haircuts, and other sorts of fuss.
So wether it's Levi's, kissin' dreams, or some guitar distorter,
Well there ain't nobody can hold a candle to our Spunky Girl Reporter!
Know what I'm sayin'?
Word to your mother!
Yea. I'm sure you're right Mike. They parted ways on pretty bad terms from what I've read. That's too bad.
Posted by: Lisa at March 13, 2009 03:55 PMThat is SO awesome Starla! WORD.
Posted by: Lisa at March 13, 2009 03:59 PMStarla, you"re too cool for school!!
Im honored that you wrote that,
you are a talented and very sweet girl!
Starla, your star shines bright,
you're so cool your out of sight!
you and your alligator shoes,
bet you can even sing the blues.
If you cant find Starla,
and you have looked high n low,
find her down at the Cracker,
puttin on a show!
Somewhere down in Florida,
walkin in the swamps,
hangin out with Duane,
walkin down the lane,
shes got a brilliant mind,
and folks she is very kind.
Starla, my poetry sucks next to yours,
but i tried...lol
hearts in the right place!
Lisa, Dickie is still messed up on drugs and drink. his playing has really deteriorted to a place where some nights hes a embarrassment. So, sad too. That cat wrote some killer tunes..it makes me so sad..he could be there...but Gregg has been sober for 10 yrs.. would you want to be around a user if you had so much as stake like your soberiety? Also, he wont play anyone elses songs and from what i hear he is very bossy and made everyone else in the band miserable.
with him gone, they are all equals and it shows!
Bruce Willis came out with the Brothers to play some wicked harmonica.. killer stuff.
A big ole jazz band(Southside Johnny n his juke horns?) was on stage with them too. break.
Boz Scaggs just stepped out on stage them. He still has them blues. Duane played on his loan me a dime lp.
Gregg and him did a duet. Boz messed up and came in too early, while Derek was soloing though. But its alright. Its friday night and he came out to play.
What can I say.
Play the blues, play all night,
man, your out of sight.
Something bout riding on a milk train...never heard this one before. if i die on top of the hill. if i dont make it , iknow my baby will.
The band is red hot tonight for sure...I didnt know that Boz was a good lead guitarist. playing a flametop paul. Sounded tight and in the pocket.
Theres something about those horns that give me goose bumps. you know Duane recorded horns one night on the Fillmore East sessions, but Tom Dowd didnt like the results so it didnt make the lp.
Aint no love, in the heart of the city, Boz, Warren, and Gregg singing alternately. I read somewhere that they have gotten so good they can play anything out there, after watching them here. I believe its true. Boz playing a flametop Paul, didnt know he was a accomplished lead player but he is!
Derek did a cool solo. And there it is...loan me a dime..killer stuff. man, i wish you could see and hear this stuff too.
Im having so much fun watchin this, it should be illegal. Would like to be in Mike's shoes to one day see them live, but im not complaining..this is a miracle that I can see it at home. you should hear the audience, whistling and yelling...you can hear them over the band..everyone is in the pocket tonight including the audience. Hot damn, I wish Duane was up there too! He would be diggin this...imagine...Duane and Derek tradin solos!!!
Bet ya Duane and Derek would have been fast friends..hes got alot of Duane's fire. Hes more intense than I last saw him on the last dvd in 03.His playin is more dynamic and fluid. Still not so hot on his Eastern chops but they r growin on me and hes learned to restrain them when playin the old authentic blues tunes. When he cuts lose on a non affected solo. watch out! Hot damn Oteil soloin on bass.. killer man.
Derek has a little of Duane's fire now. When he plays straight blues without the eastern influences he almost can touch Duane's fire. Almost, but not there, hard to explain. He may get there one day, although I dont think his solos are as inventive. No one can phrose a solo like Duane. Dont think anyone will either!
Starla, you're embarrassing me! Your poetry is music to my ears! your are a multi-talented girl for sure! I hope you dont mind me commenting on these concerts. Still amazed im viewing this live!!! Cant be real!! but it is! Im actually having to switch to just audio some to conserve my bandwidth. if i had plain dsl it wouldnt be much of a issue, but dsl isnt available here. dsl has a 20 gb a mo limit. i have a 5 gb limit. i will go over, but trying to conserve the damage.
The audience is nuts, yelling play some more, play some more. Waiting for the encore. And here comes Whipping post! Gregg is pumped up tonight, they all are. Warren solos are cool and hes been puttin the John Lennon tune Norweign Wood in his solos like Duane use to put "favorite things, and Joy to the world in his solos! Another great show...Whippin post fades out...and the shows over...whew...im tuckered out just watchin it..!

Jazz great steve brecker and drummer lenny white play solos on the song Dreams , sorry, dreams doesnt need any jazz trumpet...
Robert Randolph...the steel guitar player with the blues licks..came out and aped Derek's style perfectly...goin back and forth...cool as s**t! Derek was expressless like he was dumbfounded or something.. Wildest thing i have seen in a while.
Hes is kicka** for sure! But, Derek kicked back in and its a race to the finish!
Amazing a steel player with 10 strings with pedals sitting down playing can sound just like a regular electric guitar...if you have never seen him, check this guy out. if you listen to his music you would never know hes not playing a 6 string!
Becker, the jazz trumpet player is back n believe it or not they r playing free form jazz..Oteil grinning from ear to ear...hes is in his element. Oteil was trained in jazz if I remember right. It took a little for Warren to get in there, but he got rock solid and held his ground. Dang, pretty awesome, Duane always wanted to be in the jazz community, like the newport jazz festival. He loved the Kind of Blue jazz lp.
And now, they have segwayed into Mountain jam which turned into twin lead guitars of In Memory of Elizabeth Reed. Horn solo comes in, sounds really nice here!
Here comes Derek's best solo of the night! Pure Allman tones, with some slide added in.
Warren kicks in nice and slow and later flat burns with one of Duane's famous signature licks.
Percussionist extradenaire Mark Quinones comes in with Butch and Jaimo, Dont ja just love them ABB boys!
And the great Stanley Clark joins them. Otiel is loving this! Clark is snapping and slapping his bass and wigglin his cute little behind. :> insisted the crowd clap along.
we got a little oteil and clark duel! Clark is playing lead lines on his double cut bass.
Full blown jazz with Oteil Scat singing the bass lines as he plays!
Gettin back into the melody Warren and Derek trade red hot leads..lenny white was on the drums too.
They leave the stage, come back for a encore with just Butch and Derek on stage playing Mountain jam. And the rest come back in. Man, I love that melody.
First there is a mountain, then there is no mountain, then there is...
And unexpected they segway into Dazed and Confused! These are some versatile guys! Got fuzz and distortion and wah pedals goin here. Hot damn, ma'am! And now they go back into Mountain jam again with Butch on the kettle drums. Got to love that melody!
Theyre off tommorrow night and unless they have someone really special i will refrain from posting these. Its a lotta fun, though, and this Beacon run is dedicated to the Great, never been beat, awesome, one of a kind...Duane Allman!
Wail on, Skydog! Wail on!

Im thinkin I owe a apology to all here at the cracker for monopolizing this forum with my long winded homemade reviews of the Beacon Run.
Firstly, I will now drop my moniker Rd (rememberingDuane). Sheila is my given first name and I wont give my last. Been posting here for a few years or more under various "monikers}
After a few of these long winded diddies there are no other post but mine. I am sorry if I aggravated, and or upset any of you that visit here, by my amazement and passion of these shows.
Sometimes we dont realize what we are doing until later...like this..
So, I will no longer post these dreadfully long narratives of the concerts...The shows are special and Im not the only one that thinks so.
If you want to see great pictures and "professional" reviews of each and every show go here:

You can also see youtube videos of the shows.
I will lay low for a while, cause Ive been a very bad girl...(too much passion can unravel one! }
But as always, Wail on, Duaniacs, Wail on! Your friendship here are important to me!
Posted by: Sheila at March 16, 2009 02:34 AMSheila! What a pretty name!
What are you apologizing for?! Don't be sorry, you did a great job, and for those of us who couldn't go to NYC or subscribe to get it online, you performeda valuable service.
And I for one enjoyed your obvious enjoyment and appreciation of all the shows.
nice pic, Donnah.. Thanks !
Posted by: csason at March 16, 2009 02:48 PM"Sweet Little Sheila.." I bet you've heard that a lot in your life!
No need to apologize, Sheila about the long reviews. I love reading them. Especially coming from someone who truly loves the band. I may not listen to a lot of the more recent ABB than I do their eartly stuff with Duane, but they ARE the Allman Brothers Band & not many (if anybody) can hold a candle to them.
And that's such a shame that Dickey still has his demons. In the Big House documentary Mama Louise said that Dickey was "mean" when she described him. :/
Thought I'd also mention I rarely post on the week ends cuz I don't have the internet at home. So please don't think it has anything to do with your posts about the Beacon Sheila. I'm "goofing off" at work right now as I type. Doh. I'm planning on getting the wireless stuff at home soon & then I'll be able to work a bit at home while I'm goofing off instead of visa-versa. lol.
In the Please Call Home/The Big House Years documentary there's a clip of the ABB playing Midnight Rider live at the end. Derek is awesome on the slide. And of course so is Warren. Warren can make his guitar sound like a "whistle" or almost "flute-like" like I say Duane does sometimes. Kinda like the way Duane sounds in the song "Dreams" among others, is what I mean. My brother always says the first time he heard the song "One Way Out" he thought somebody was playing a violin. :)
I would've liked to heard them talk about Duane way more in the Big House movie than they did but I understand it wasn't supposed to be just about Duane. It was still very interesting. I've watched it twice.
I better get back to work now!
Dog Beds...lmfao
Posted by: Lisa at March 16, 2009 03:17 PMI would absolutely die of shame, and no joking around, if I found out that I'd acted in a way that made somebody think I was "mean" and thought so strongly enough to tell the whole world for posterity. Urrrggghhh, Dickey.
Posted by: Starla Darling at March 16, 2009 04:15 PMSame here Starla. Although I don't think she meant he was mean to her (don't know) but just a general observation she was making. Now if you add drunk to being mean... And no offense to Dickey. I love the guy. Always have. The meanie.
Posted by: Lisa at March 16, 2009 05:12 PMI think it would be worse to have somebody think/say you were mean in general than for one or two people to think you were just mean to them personally.
