The Allman Joys, before the heyday of the style consultant.
Wail on, Skydog
Does Gregg have a "tough" guy look going on there while Duane has a shit eating grin on his face
Posted by: Baron Thoma at April 22, 2009 10:56 PMEven the use of wild, hippy clothing could not save the Allman Joy's from their fate. Being crushed between two buses isnt fun. Never is being named after a candy bar.
All kidding aside, love the threads. Oh, those were the days. We thought our generation would save the world! It turns out the world had other ideas and in the end, we did too.
But we did create a lasting line of fascinating clothing, jewelry and wonderful music!
The 60s and 70s were a gas, gas, gas, to bad it didnt last!
Duane is looking like he just pulled an especially ingenious prank on somebody, and they possibly are not aware of it yet, but when they do discover it... fun fun fun.
I think the Allman Joys is actually fairly cute, as band names go. Let's face it, it's a bit more creative than just Allman Brothers' Band.
Ugly, ugly, ugly 1960's garb. Duane wearing cufflinks...what the heck. Growing out their hair, wearing crappy clothes....they didn't have a chance in hell! Oh well, all for the best.....40 years later and thanks to DA......still going strong.
Donnah, thank you just doesn't cover what Skydog Wednesday's mean to all of us...but it's the best we got....Thank you!
Wail on, Skydog!
Posted by: cindy at April 23, 2009 11:45 AMSheila,
Regarding our generation failing to save the world. I think you are overrating what the world did to us to stop the change.
I think we let go, we stopped fighting to easily, to soon. We "grew up" and bought into system. The lure of the power, money, and influence was just too appealing.
All I wanna do here is say that if we are gonna note the historical forces at work, we must also note our failures.

Because Duane died way to young; he never had to face this problem. Reminds me of the line Emmylou Harris wrote in her song tribute ("Boulder to Birmingham") to the late Gram Parsons, "The hardest part is knowing I'll survive."
Duane gave us all he had, then we lost him and had to find a way to survive.
Don't get me wrong, Duane by himself isn't significant factor in our survival, but he's a major part of what does get guys and girls like me throught our days. His contribution to the music that helps us carry on is incalculable.

Posted by: Paco Maco at April 23, 2009 12:02 PMAmen, Paco. I'm enough of a mess with Duane, I shudder to think what I'd be without him. Wail on! I thank God for Donnah and her photos but I'm getting a little neurotic on Wednesday waiting for the next photo to post.
Posted by: Willard at April 23, 2009 01:26 PMYou preach it Brother Paco!
Amen & Amen..............

Posted by: James at April 23, 2009 05:09 PMAnother from the lace period..actually, almost pre-lace.
Posted by: csason at April 24, 2009 09:00 AMIs it just me, or are Duane & Gregg the only ones who don't look like chicks?
Posted by: Lisa at April 24, 2009 01:42 PMPaco, please read my post again, what you said is true and I concur. I just said it with fewer words. quote from me, "It turns out the world had other ideas and in the end, we did too."
It is my opinion that it takes more than one generation to change the world. The flower power thing at most lasted 10 yrs tops. Probably less. High ideals and high hopes require work, sacrifice and dedication. Alias, we smoked too much dope to care. In the end it didnt lead us anywhere. Very few were pro-active enough to keep the love generation going. Santana is one perhaps, but even he is playing Vegas now.
We grew up thats all! As cool as my hippie days were there wasnt enough of us to change anything permanently although; thankfully influences are still felt now and again. Thank goodness for that!
I mean, even Duane, most likely would have changed when the money started rolling in. It pretty much happens rather you intend it to or not. The world is bigger than any one person and its influences cannot be overcome unless you live in closed society like a commune, ashram or the like.
As for the hippy clothes, they were right on the money for their time! You had to have been there to appreciate the style man!
I was listening to a live booleg of the Allman joys just yesterday. Singing hits like the Beatles help and the yardbirds. And Duane with reverb effects sounding like a lounge act. Even playing a little lounge music in between songs.
Everyone has their generation to remember. Dont bash others memories. They dont and can relate to todays stuff. Younger folks following this blog..how do you think your music and clothes will measure up in 30 or 40 years? Believe me the lastest generation will laugh and make fun too.
Thats just the way is is! Ok, Im done. I feel better now. Thanks for reading. Wail on brothers and sisters and rock on and have a good time! Brother Duane, you are frozen in time, and in some ways your lucky. You will never get old, obsolete or die in obscurity.
And never end up doing crap like "Rock of Love." lol and gag me with a spoon, but that show is so gross.
And Sheila, you are exactly right what you just said, but you left out something. I cannot speak with much authority, not being of your generation, but I would also say that another factor that led to the "failure to change the world" was simple impatience. Let's face it, we humans like quick results, and preferably instant ones too. When we don't get them, we tend to quit trying and move on to something else.
Posted by: Starla Darling at April 24, 2009 04:35 PMExactly right Starla, can I say "micro-wave" and "click to purchase this movie now"!
Everyone here on cracker have a safe and wonderful 60s style weekend! Play Duane and wear bell bottoms and paisley shirts, if someone makes fun of you wipe their face in the dirt! lol
Peace out man! (can I say too much caffeine?)
no more big gulp coffee for me. lol
No bell-bottoms for me this weekend, I'm wearing shorts! Going to be in the upper eighties tomorrow, yippee!
Can I say "too much sunshine and fresh air?"
*stretches back, closes eyes and lifts face to the sun's fiery kiss*
Starla wash your mouth out with Duane soap on a rope! too much sun, how is that possible? I havent been able to get in the sun since last year. I dont get out much these days. So, I spend my time dreaming of Tennessee and tweeting on twitter, looking up Duane stuff and generally surfing endlessly on the net..its not exciting but its all i got for now..fresh air? whats that?
In the end, its the little things in life that mean the most.
Posted by: Sheila at April 25, 2009 10:32 AMYou're so right. And sunshine and fresh air are two of those very important "little things" except I'd call them big things.
I've got all the windows wide open today (whoever invented screens was a genius) and have been outside since six in the AM filling my planters with herbs. (No, not that kind of herb! Now it's Sheila's turn to wash her mouth out!) After while I head back out to hang up my hot pink and orange geraniums.
And another of those all-important "little things" is: sleeping with the windows open!
Obviously this works best where you don't have to listen to your neighbors' arguing, or their dog barking, or them working on their engines. And those that work on engines often feel the need to do this at two AM. Why is that?
