Classic pigeon toe......

Posted by: mike the bike at April 29, 2009 10:03 PM

Ya know, that's the first thing that jumped out at me about that pic too.

Posted by: Donnah at April 29, 2009 10:29 PM

You can actually see the bow in his left tibia.

Posted by: mike the bike at April 30, 2009 12:56 AM

Wow, had seen this picture countless times before and I'd never noticed this before.

Posted by: YO at April 30, 2009 03:12 AM

Wonder what the story is behind that stance?

Posted by: Starla Darling at April 30, 2009 08:56 AM

Is that possibly the stance one needed to kick start a Triumph motorcycle? Wail on!

Posted by: Willard at April 30, 2009 09:59 AM

Making his own toes curl! ;) What is up with the "studed" pants? Wow......great pic.

Thanks Donnah.....you never cease to amaze me.

Wail on Skydog!

Posted by: cindy at April 30, 2009 11:36 AM

I have read in the past, remarks making fun of the way Duane walked. He may or may not have been pigeoned toed. Who cares! Skydog and his memory will live forever without a mention of this. After all his talent was in his fingers, not his toes!

Just got a email that Moogis Mondays is soons starting in May. For $15.00 you can pick the concert of your choice. I highly reccommend the 2nd concert that Eric Clapton played on. One of the best live shows I have ever witnessed. The repport with Derek was outstanding and they were all "Hittin the note" that night in particular. You could tell they were having fun!

Starla would be cool to great more swamp updates! Im working on knitting me some alligator underwear myself, but will only wear them on special occasions! lol

Posted by: Sheila at April 30, 2009 12:57 PM

I was at that show, and it was incredible. See it.

Posted by: Mike The Bike at April 30, 2009 01:14 PM

I think we can call that "toe-jam"! :)

Great pic Donnah! I don't remember ever seeing this one before and that was the first thing I noticed too!

Posted by: Lisa at April 30, 2009 02:13 PM

Cindy! lmao! I'm wiping Coke off my monitor over that one. Jeez.
Sheila, alligator undies sound like a plan. And the thong part at the back can be the curly tail of the gator.

Posted by: Starla Darling at April 30, 2009 04:23 PM

Emailed BT about it, who says it's just a bad picture. He says that Duane "walked straight as an arrow".

Posted by: mike the bike at April 30, 2009 07:02 PM

...maybe he's just about to turn to Gregg to let him know his lead is done??? (hand is somewheres around that high solo-ending chord in Whipping Post...?)

And is this the last night of the Mar 12-14 or the last night of the Fillmore, Mar 27?

Posted by: Ben at April 30, 2009 09:09 PM

I read in an article where his walk was described as peculiar. Some of y'all probably read it; it's after the Layla sessions. I'll look for it.

Ben, this is listed as June 27, 1971. I'd checked the live show database to get the venue.

Posted by: Donnah at April 30, 2009 09:26 PM

There are bootlegs of that show. I have it including many other boots of Duane era shows. They were obtained by a friend who grew up in the area and traded legally.

You can find many live shows of the Allman Brothers including some with Duane. at sugarmegs dot org. Although they dont have the last Filmore East show.

All I can say about the way Duane walked, is "Walk this Way!" lol

If you havent checked them out, I recommend them highly. They offer a huge library of live shows free. The shows will play on your media player as streaming audio. I have been a fan for years and years.

yeah, Donnah you and I are talking about the same thing. I read something about him walking in Muscle Shoals studios and someone mentioned a long haired skinny kid with bowed legs. Im thinking it was on Midnight Riders book, but might be on skydog, I cant remember for sure.

Rock on, and have you a good time! Skydog would!

Posted by: Sheila at April 30, 2009 10:53 PM

Great job Donnah: again, your photo post here captures Duane and Dicky completely locked, playing as one.

Starla - regarding the stance: a good example of total focus of a man with a guitar playing "music for the gods". Duane showing us "the zen of guitar" excellence playing the blues.

In 1999 there was a couple of interviews done with Abb members.

I have read alot of stuff on the net, but up to now missed this one. Two parts stand out. Interviewing Gregg about what Duane would have been doing if he had been living:

Asked what he thinks Duane would have done if he had lived, he says, “I don’t know if he would’ve done the next four or five records with the band. He might have gone his own way, like Clapton did with Blind Faith and Cream, jumping around. I was wondering the other day if the band would still be around if Duane was still here…. I don’t know.” If Duane hadn’t gotten involved in music, he thinks he would have maybe ended up working in Silicon Valley, or drinking himself to death.

The other part of the interview made me realize once again how much pain the brothers have been in, in the past. Now remember this interview was in 99 before they became popular once again. The 80s werent too hot for them. Southern rock was dead at that time and Gregg was playing small clubs again.

After the show, Gregg Allman reminisces about how his brother would have probably ended up spending the Eighties playing in small clubs, just like him. “It made me really remember who I was. I had to tote that organ a few times. It weighs the same as a heartache, but if you want to play badly enough, you’ll carry the damn thing.”

The same as a heartache?

Allman cracks a smile. “No, the same as a Harley. 406 pounds. Nothing weighs as much as a heartache.”

If you could go back thirty years, and you knew everything that was going to happen with this band, both the good things and the tragedies, would you go down that road again?

Allman snorts. “Well, at that age, it would be pretty overwhelming to receive all that information at once.” Then he pauses and weighs the balance of his life, the festivals and the funerals, and decides on the path he’s already taken. “But, yeah. Once music gets you, you’ll go wherever it takes to play. Yeah.” He walks off into the night, heading for his dogs-but-no-smoking bus.

Article by Gavin Edwards. Originally published (in a slightly shorter version) as “Nothing Weighs as Much as a Heartache” in Rolling Stone 826 (November 25, 1999).

the rest is on the net..if you cant find it and want the link let me know.

Silicon Valley or drinking oneself to death. That gives you about all the room in the world, right?

Posted by: Starla Darling at May 1, 2009 08:47 AM

Starla, remember I didnt say that, Gregg said that in 1999. What I believe what he was trying to say is this, his brother was extremely intelligent and got bored easily. Its a danger to be that intelligent because of the boredom factor.

And those choices were "If" he didnt play music!

Two extremes for sure, but then Gregg and the band had hardcore addictions to alcohol and heroin in the early days. Duane would have overcome them Im sure and been a working musician till the end. But, if he couldnt play music then, silicon valley wouldnt be far fetched considering how smart Duane was.

My take on this, if Duane would have lived, the band would have broken up like most do. In the interview the writer mentioned that Abb were not close knit, if they werent touring they very seldom visited each other.

Duane would have been a solo act with his own band, probably in and out of a few others. Then in later years, I would guess they would all be back together again. It seems to me that long lived bands travel in a natural circle eventually ending up back at the beginning together again.

But the truth is even Gregg would never be able to truely know what Duane would have done if he would have survived that bike accident.

Wail on skydog, wail on into the night! With weds pics, your light will always shine bright!

I know what he was getting it, but his choices just kinda struck me funny. Reminded me of a line in "Sister Act" when Sister Mary Patrick (I think) says that her mother used to say "That's girl's full of sunshine. She'll either be a nun or a stewardess."
Isn't stream of consciousness fun?
(It's either that or I ate some bad fruit int he swamps by mistake.)

Posted by: Starla Darling at May 1, 2009 12:55 PM

It's an interesting subject. It always seemed like one of the main reasons the band stayed together & kept going on is BECAUSE of Duane's death. It's as if due to his untimely death there was a strong need to keep his dream alive because they knew he'd want it that way. And out of the love & respect they all had for our Great One's memory, they succeeded. If he was still around the whole time, that part of it anyway, wouldn't have been in the equation.

I also think Duane would have battled his demons and won. And that whatever Duane wanted, his strong determination and his undying love for music would have prevailed, whether with the Allman Brothers Band or elsewhere.

Posted by: Lisa at May 1, 2009 06:16 PM

Mike..they call that "bow", 'swayback' in the south..I noticed Duane has the classic swayback
pose* in many of his photos..especially those of his youth.

*not always in the swayback position, but often with one leg 'cocked' out.

nm, it's too hard to explain.

Posted by: csason at May 2, 2009 09:07 AM

Doctor Owen, in your clinical opinion, would you say the swayback pose/posturing exhibited by this patient originates in the back? Or is it a hip or leg issue?
Starla, who has caught herself standing "off kilter" often over the years
PS: Oops! Off kilter doesn't mean you should take your kilt off, Owen!

Posted by: Starla Darling at May 2, 2009 09:37 AM

very funny...Starla Dahling.. have you been trying to peek up my kilt again ???

Posted by: csason at May 2, 2009 02:49 PM

*wide, innocent eyes*
Of course not, Owen! It's just that it's kind of unavoidable if you insist on standing so close to me when I have chosen to sit on the floor! Standing close, leaning over, walking back and forth in front as you talk...

Posted by: Starla Darling at May 2, 2009 04:27 PM

Lisa, well said! I unfortunately always say things the wrong away around and it takes to long to type it at times. Kinda like takin the long way home!

Posted by: Sheila at May 2, 2009 05:01 PM

Dear Friends,

My computer is down for repairs. See you soon.

Donnah, if you know how to let Starla know my computer is broken, that would be a big help, thanks a million, Paco (Jim)

Posted by: Paco Malo at May 3, 2009 11:53 AM

It's okay, Paco, I saw this message. No worries, and hope the PC is feeling better soon.

Check out the cool rare audio on youtube of Duane and some fine solo cuts with Duane!

Look up the user Truckstop go see him and hear him. Type in Duane Allman - The Para Normal Amsterdam Concert.

After you see that look up on the right corner and click on Truckstop and see the others he posted.

There is also one I had never heard before its a radio interview with no video. The sound is really bad but Duane bought his guitar and played some fine country pickin kinda like Doc Watson plays. let me know what you think?

He did some cools stuff with the videos of Duane and put effects in em.. Really cool!

Posted by: Sheila at May 4, 2009 12:40 AM

Thanks Shiela for the comment. I by no means meant to sound as if I were disagreeing with anything you said. I was just expressing some thoughts.

And thanks for the heads up on the Duane youtube stuff. I'll definitely be checking that out.

Posted by: Lisa at May 4, 2009 01:54 PM

Lisa, no problem! I never take offense at comments! No two people ever see things the same and thats the way it should be! It what makes the world go round and round!

Ohh, Im getting Dizzy! "Play the blues"

Posted by: Sheila at May 4, 2009 11:32 PM

I wonder if there really would be a market for
'slit kilts' ...

Posted by: csason at May 5, 2009 09:44 AM

I bet there'd be. A small market, probably, but a market nonetheless.
The $64000 question is...
Would *you* buy one? And if you did, would you *wear* one?

Posted by: Starla Darling at May 5, 2009 11:55 AM

yeah.. but only for speshull events.

Posted by: csason at May 5, 2009 04:08 PM

Anytime you wear a slit kilt, it's a sunshine-speshull day!
