Wednesday's Duane Allman Pic

Loudermilk_DuaneAllman450.jpg
A long-fingered Duane, seen here with John Loudermilk, making his first recordings.
Summer of 1966.
Wail on, Skydog!

Pic via the wonderful Sheila in e-mail.

And from a nice new site I just discovered:

Prior to recording Hour Glass and Power of Love, Duane and Gregg had recorded as The Allman Joys for John D. Loudermilk in the summer of ‘66, and the single “Spoonful”/”You Deserve Each Other” was released on Dial Records that September. Loudermilk subsequently introduced the brothers to producer Buddy Killen and another session was recorded at Bradley’s Barn, a recording studio in Nashville. These ‘66 sessions were not released until 1973 on the album Early Allman by The Allman Joys. As a live act, The Allman Joys had played in small clubs throughout the South and Midwest with a repertoire consisting of hits by British bands such as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and The Yardbirds. They would play Motown and other R&B hits as well. In their early days, the band even backed a teenage girl group called The Sandpipers, out of Pensacola. The Allman Joys urged the girls to follow them to New York where The Sandpipers landed a recording contract with Trude Heller and released a few singles with moderate success on Tru-Glo-Town records. The Allman Joys, however, were not chosen by Heller to be the studio backing band and the two groups parted ways. A bootleg recording of The Allman Joys backing The Sandpipers does exist as a testimony to this union and includes the song “Remember (Walking in the Sand).”

Boy what are the odds? I'm first again this week. Donnah, who is that with Duane? Maybe I should ask Shiela. Who is that with Duane, Shiela? Anyho....back to the dizzying stripes again. This pic shows off those long fingers. Looks like he was a nail biter at this point of his life.......

OK guys, what are all the wires on the guitar? I have never seen any pickups quite like those.

Love the old flip up sunglasses. My Dad used to wear those. Thank you Shiela and thanks to you as always Donnah.

Wail on, Skydog!

Wow. Never saw that one before.

Man, that barely even looks like Duane! Must be the hair.

Thanks ladies! And I love the site you discovered too Donnah. Thanks for sharing that.

I remember reading that Duane had a distortion
box that he would attach to his guitar; maybe that's what the strange wired-up looking thing is.

Thanks for the link, Donnah.

Oh, those fingers!
Mmmmmm!
That's all I got to say.
*fanning herself*

It's just a finger(s) Starla..sheesh..

I actually owned one of those bootleg copies..until one woeful post huntin' trip morn, when mine
eyes did witness ex-wife number one burning
said bootleg, and many other objects she found
disdainful.

Ahh... but I recall when they were for sale at Lil
General stores. :)

Thanks Sheilah ! and Donnah belle.

JUST fingers, he says. That's like saying the Lady Liberty is JUST a statue, or the Hope Diamond is JUST a stone. Sheesh, yourself, Owen.
And about disdainful: your ex was disdainful of your bootleg and other things. She found them distasteful. And I find her behavior both distasteful and disrespectful. :)

Geez, Donnah, Thanks you! but I dont need the credit, though its really appreciated. Always want to help in finding new Duane info and pictures. Its a passion of mine.

Thing is I have to dig deeper and deeper to find new stuff.

csason, who knows I might could hook you up with one of them general stores. You never know.

The thing that got me on this photo was his huge hands! I am sure that helped him play so well. Sure couldnt hurt! Starla...wow, girl you slay me...you get so excited over hands..where does your mind run to girl? You better run and catch it! lol

I think Duane used a Dallas Orbiter fuzz with almost dead batteries to get his tone when he was playing Fenders. The single coils dont have the sustain or the low end grunt the humbucker do. He quit using the box when he switched to Pauls.

Im guessing this photo might be around the time he was with Greg with the Allman Joys..Dont know for sure though, its just a guess.

Wail on Brothers and sisters and have you a good time! Duane of course will always be wailing in the background of all our lives!

Just checked out the site Donnah suggested and its awesome! Donnah is a Duane Sleuth extradanaire for sure! Thanks Donnah for all you do for us looney tune Duaniacs! :>

Anyone wanting a "authentic" non bootleg T shirt should check out hittinthenote dot com. There is a really neat T with Duane and his famous epitaph..words he wrote in his diary on New Year day 1969 The proceeds go to Duanes estate which in turn I would be guessing go to his only heir his daughter Galladrielle.

"This year I will be more thoughtful of my fellow man, exert more effort in each of my endeavors professionally as well as personally. Take love wherever I find it, and offer it to everyone who will take it. In this coming year I will seek knowledge from those wiser than me and try to teach those who wish to learn from me. I love being alive and I will be the best man I possibly can."

Cool words for anyone to live by and amazing for a kid that was only 21 or so at the time.

Now if that isn't the best New Year resolution anybody came up with...
Sheila, where my mind runs to? With those hands?
Basketball! Those are basketball player hands to a T.
*wide, surprised eyes*
What do you think I was thinking of?
You got a dirty mind, sister Sheila. lol

Starla whooooooo meeeeeeeee! hehehehehe!

Posted by: Sheila at May 13, 2009 10:05 PM

Hey, I have a theory of about all the stripes going on with the shirts! Duane and his baby bro spent a lot of time in Florida. beaches, shorts, sun, eeks! Lots of stripes on the beach...they still are living there I think! And of course stripes were really hip in the 60's too.

Well, the stripes are anyway, alive and well on Florida beaches and probably even on Gulf of Mexico beaches round here, Galveston etc.

I dont have anything against stripes I just dont have anything for em either! lol

Worse thing ever...stripes goin the wrong way on the wrong size person...not pretty! lol

What guitar did Duane use here..Is this when he had his tele/strat combo?

Posted by: Baron Thoma at May 13, 2009 10:40 PM

I don't care much for those wild, crazy stripes myself, but probably if they were as in-style now as they must have been back then, I'd feel different about them. It's all what you're used to, isn't it?
Tie-dye seems to be making a comeback here. In fact last week I was in Kohl's and bought myself two cute tie-dyed t-shirts, one blues and greens and the other pinks and oranges.

Posted by: Starla Darling at May 14, 2009 08:41 AM

I think Duane is wondering where he can get a shirt made out of that tie material. Wail on!!

Posted by: Willard at May 14, 2009 10:11 AM

thanks for this cool pic, y'all.

that's duane and his tele with the outboard fuzz unit. you can see it really well on the pics where he's falling to his knees with the hourglass.

fuzz on, everyone!

no doubt Willard..

Check Loudermilk out..with the flip shades and
ulster tie.. Wonder if Duane burned one with that
freekazoid pen waving shyster ?

Posted by: csason at May 18, 2009 10:37 AM

I do like those shades. Very cool.
