Here's a then unknown Dwight Yoakam performing from the EP that would soon be refashioned into the breakthrough classic album Guitars, Cadillacs, Etc., Etc. (a keeper that I have on album, cassette, CD, and i-tunes):
This is my favorite cover of "Ring of Fire" but not Mr. Cracker's. He said this one is too "chipper," causing me to ponder his emotional landscape. Elation not desperation, sweetie.
Posted by floridacracker at May 21, 2009 03:53 PMI like this version but I prefer his cover of "I Want You To Want Me". I can actually understand the lyrics. As far as Dwight albums, my favorite is 'Gone'. Wail Nasal!!!
Posted by: Willard at May 23, 2009 09:56 AMI was driving my dad one time and had in "Guitars, Cadillac" and he asked who that was. The next we drove it was "Got any more of that Dwight Yoakam?"
It was the first time we connected musically. LOL.
I love his cover of IWYTWM too. Good stuff.
Posted by: Donnah at May 23, 2009 04:41 PMI agree with Mr.Cracker...
in the original version, the "ring of fire" didn't sound like a good thing.
Yeah.. Dwight did make this a 'chipper' cover..What else in the hell are you supposed to do covering that song ?? Pretend you're Johnny...?? nah.
I sort of like his version of Good Time Charlie, but Guitars Cadillacs is the keeper, that and Honky Tonk Man. He bleeds Buck Owens, though.. through and through..except when he was giving Carl a private concert on Slingblade... mm mmm.
Happy 'morial Day Donnah..!
The only time I connected musically with MY Dad was when I told him what Roy Acuff said about the "orange farming bizness", or maybe when those
mushrooms were kicking in that one day...
thanks for playing the game again, she was elated.her baby loves her.you both won.feels good to dilute the misery.if you git the chanch when we get to surf city was sweet. love, you are your brothers keeper
Posted by: dan at May 28, 2009 11:45 AMMy daddy and me would argue about rock and country. My dad said rock would die and fade away and I said old time country would. Well, my daddy passed back in 2005 and I still think about those conversations.
We were both right and wrong too! 2 ways to look at at.
My dad was right old time Hank Williams style country never did completely die out. The nasal twang and steel guitar songs are still there, but not on the radio.
But many would argue real country music is dead. Today's country sounds much more like 70s pop mixed with rock than country today. So, I guess we were both right. The old traditionalists of country hate the "new" sound. It aint "new" its just borrowed! lol
And as far as rock goes, its aint the same rock on the radio that I grew up with! but, then that happens to everyone. Style comes and goes, but the kids who are listening to radio and mp3 really like 60s and 70s rock.
But, If you go on the fm dial, losts of oldie rock, but not many people are buying new stuff from performers from that era. They dont play their new stuff.
The older I get the more I realize that life is like a big old wheel. If you are lucky enough to live long enough the wheel will always return back to where it once was! New stuff gets added and stuff gets subtracted but the genuine articles of music and fashion just keeps goin round and round on that giant wheel. Recycling itself over and over.
Dwight is cool, He wiggles his butt real nice! lol And he can sing good too! lol!
