Wednesday's Duane Allman Pic

duanebrazil450.jpg
He seems kind of sad in this one...
Like he knows the roadies are backstage finishing off the hash.
Wail on, Skydog!

He is seeing his short future and wailing till the end. Wail on, Duane, we will always remember you and carry your torch into the future you never had. Nice pic, I can't figure out what is going on with that hand. I tried to put mine in that same position and I think I'll have to get out the Ben-Gay.

This is a very cool magazine cover. Makes Duane look sort of exotic and sexy! woo woo!

I do believe the shirt was embellished with air brush artistry as well as other aspects of Duane.

With the clouds in the background it is a fitting picture giving the whole scene a rather ethereal feel.

But then, I have always thought when Duane was "hitting the note" the music indeed took him to a very sacred and special place reserved for the very few who had the ability to transcend space and time if only for a little while.

And when we ordinary souls are receptive enough to be swept away with his soulful notes we get a glimpse of that place he was so very familar with!

Y'all know what I am talking about. Riding in the car with ABB on, turned up loud on a nice starry evening or a quiet country road. Sometimes his solos just take you there, you dont know where, but your there and you just know its right and a very special place!

I have always believed one of the reasons Duane died so young was he was stuck between heaven and earth. And one day the heavenly pull was just too much. (I think his notes could make even God cry)

The name Skydog fits him better than his given name. Its more than a name its a state of being.
(not talking bout drugs either here)

Well, here I go again, too many words..I wish I could just leave you with a little Duane feeling here...Dreams solo please guys...goodnight.

Wail on Skydog!

Ethereal is exactly the word for this pic. Very much so.
And he doesn't look exactly sad, I think the word there is pensive.
Willard, you probably can't get your hand to do that because you're a little older than Duane was at the time this was taken. lol

Seems to me that it's more like....

Damn it, you're behind the beat again! Tighten it up!!

Posted by: mike the bike at June 3, 2009 11:32 PM

Typed in the name of the magazine on the web and its a Brazilian publication..Would make a excellent poster if you could airbush all the writing off except for the Duane Allman. Would be a cool site to browse through but me speaka nothing but a english! zeezzz Louise!

Posted by: sheila at June 4, 2009 02:25 AM

That expression on Duane's face looks like concentration, straight up. To me, that's how tight bands get that way, concentrating on the rest of the band.

Posted by: Paco Malo at June 4, 2009 05:41 AM

I don't think this is a photo. I think it is a painting. Now I know which picture it was painted from.....he was giving little Bro' a kind of "get your ars in gear look". But I think it's a painting of the pic. Still....way cool and one Donnah looked long and hard for I am sure. She is just the cats meow isn't she? Taking care of our ragtag band of believers. The religion of Skydog of course!

Shiela, if you don't mind I would like to hear the solo in You Don't Love Me he did in memory of King Curtis.......my very, very, very favorite of all...........aaaaaahhhhhhh.........HEAVEN!

Wail on, Skydog!

Posted by: cindy at June 4, 2009 10:53 AM

It's def a painting of a pic. I thought that was understood. Sorry.

Posted by: Donnah at June 4, 2009 12:41 PM

Yeah Donnah, the picture is like the live like painting a couple of months ago you posted that was on Guitar World magazine or something similar.

Zeez! Cindy my brain shorted out. I said Dreams...guess it came to mind cause of the clouds and unreal setting of the cover here. But, yeah, oh hell yeah! The solo on Live at the Fillmore East...You Dont love me! The ultimate as far as guitar playing goes for sure..YOU R RIGHT ON THE MONEY!!!!! :>

Posted by: sheila at June 4, 2009 06:07 PM

I'm partial to the solo after Berry's solo on 'Mountain Jam'. It brins tears to my eyes. The 'Loan Me A Dime' guitar stuff is best. I love how the intensity builds with the horns then just blows it out.

Posted by: Willard at June 4, 2009 06:44 PM

You Don't Love Me on the Live at Fillmore East album has been my favorite Allman Brothers song since I can remember. My brother Matthew's favorite is Don't Keep Me Wondering. He's always played his guitar along with Duane & says that's his favorite one to play. He says even to this day that Duane taught him how to play the guitar.

Nice pic Donnah. Wonder what they're saying about Duane in Brazil?

For your audio pleasure http://theultimatebootlegexperience.blogspot.com/search/label/Allman%20Brothers%20Band

I'm sure our hostess will especially love the February 28, 1971 cover.

Speaking of paintings, I have a Wednesday's Duane Allman Pic request: have you ever shown the ghostly painting of Duane that hangs in the H & H in Macon? That needs to be seen by the geographically challenged.

I had the great fortune to live in Macon when I was in college- and ironically, my last address was on (ugh) Hillcrest, a few houses down from Pio Nono. The spirit of the ABB (and Duane and Berry in particular) is very heavily present there.

Posted by: Surfer Joe at June 5, 2009 07:35 PM

Wow, yet another thread-killer for SJ- is this strictly a chick scene around here, or what?

Posted by: Surfer Joe at June 7, 2009 04:50 AM

I'll sort through the H&H pics to see which one you're referring to.
It's not a chick scene, but the chicks here do get to let down their hair and say what they want. Sometimes that's about Duane's hair. :)
I know I felt kinda stifled talking about its degrees of fluffiness on other sites because it was mainly gearheads.

Posted by: Donnah at June 7, 2009 06:48 AM

Some drunk guy yelled "Whippin Post !"

Thanks for the painture, Donnah..

Posted by: csason at June 7, 2009 09:34 AM

Don't worry Joe. Guys and gals are both welcomed here. Sometimes the guys get tired of all the hair and clothes talk, and sometimes the girls get tired of all the gear talk. But we all manage to get along anyway.

Posted by: Starla Darling at June 7, 2009 10:17 AM

Thanks, ladies, Next time I'll try to come up with something about Duane's pants. Maybe there's a pair on eBay!

Just kidding, folks.

Seriously, the Duane painting hung over the juke box (which contained records by Reverend Ike and the Five Blind Boys From Alabama) for years and was still there the last time I stopped in, about 1999. There were a lot of great vintage pictures of the Brothers near the register, as I'm sure you know.

For anyone who hasn't seen that painting, though, it's something to see!

Posted by: Surfer Joe at June 7, 2009 09:51 PM

I'm sure if you searched deep enough on Ebay, you'd run across a pair of pants that were at least claimed to be Duane's.

Posted by: Starla Darling at June 7, 2009 10:02 PM

Well, I couldn't afford 'em, wouldn't fit into 'em, and wouldn't deserve to wear 'em, but I do need a new pair of britches every time I hear the first 45 seconds of "Statesboro Blues"...

Hey, Starla- thanks for helpin' me steer this discussion back onto the high road!

Posted by: Surfer Joe at June 8, 2009 12:38 AM

Joe, you are my kind of man....using the word britches and all. Next week will be gear week only guys and gals....we don't want to run off any Duaniacs because of our...um...um... how would you say it exactly.....oh yea, obsession.;) Well maybe a few fashion/hair tips will be thrown in for good measure!

Once again thank you Donnah for letting us be nutty (opps, wrong thread...that belongs in the Carradine thread) around here week after wonderful week.

Wail on, Skydog!

Posted by: cindy at June 8, 2009 10:38 AM

Thanks, Cindy, and as to my kind of woman, if I ever met a female in Real Life as into the ABB as I am she'd have to get a restraining order, an unlisted number, and maybe a big dog.

As one of the only Duane fans around here this week with an actual Whipping Post, I'll attempt to kick off the gear discussion: Duane's tiger-stripe Gibson- which of his known pants goes best with it?

Posted by: Surfer Joe at June 8, 2009 12:15 PM

The pants that come to my mind are the ones he's wearing in the "Duane" crane pictures. (The big letters that say "Duane" in the background) Those pants are crazy striped so I'm worried they might clash a bit with his tiger stripe Gibson. Actually, I don't know of anything those pants WOULDN'T clash with. lol. I don't think I've ever seen a picture of him wearing those on stage, but I do think there's one of Gregg wearing them. Whatcha think fellow Duane Ladies?

Posted by: Lisa at June 8, 2009 01:47 PM

No no no! NEVEr mix stripes and stripes! Plain blue jeans with the tiger striped guitar!
TIGHT blue jeans1
*shivers*

Posted by: Starla Darling at June 8, 2009 02:56 PM

Agreed, agreed my dear Lisa.....too many stripes going on with those hideous stripped britches! Our beloved Duane would have never, ever worn those ugly things on stage...he probably only had them on in those pictures because all his were dirty and he borrowed little Bro's pants for the pics. Example:

Twiggs: Hey stop Red Dog! See that damn crane over there...let's wake Duane up and get a picture of him in front of it.

Red Dog: I ain't waking him up.

Twiggs: Duane, get your ass up and get a picture with that crane over there.

DA: What crane?

Twiggs: Just throw on some britches and get over there.

DA: (grabs the first pair of britches he gets his hands on, goes out) Shit Twiggs, what the **** man!

Twiggs: (Laughing) Where did you find those ugly things.

DA: Oh hell, they're Greggs, just hurry the hell up.

Now I think the studded jeans would look best with the tiger-striped Gibson. Little risque' don't ya think?

Posted by: cindy at June 8, 2009 03:03 PM

What isn't generally known is that Gregg dearly loved those striped britches, and was fiercely protective of them; he was reportedly highly upset when he found out Duane had had them on. He was even more upset than he would have been had Duane carelessly borrowed his toothbrush.
Yes, the studded jeans! Yes! Yes!
*shivers again*

Posted by: Starla Darling at June 8, 2009 03:08 PM

LOL Cindy! I bet that's exactly how it went.

Ok, the studded ones would be awesome. I knew I'd get some flack about the striped ones! And I'd also vote against those jeans where he's sleeping on the floor with the guitar. Remember them? The way they looked makes me think he was working on his bike or something that day. Although I have no problem with a man doing some work, getting hammered & passing out all in the same jeans. (& he still looked pretty good in them, I thought) :)

Posted by: Lisa at June 8, 2009 04:04 PM

Oh, I love that pic! It's maybe my favorite from this site. So cute.
It reminds me a little of Dustin after Xmas dinner: if nothing stops him, he'll sack right out on the floor for an hour. And then wake up starving and be ready to tear into the desserts.

Posted by: Starla Darling at June 8, 2009 04:27 PM

Whenever I see that picture it puts me in the mood for some good ol' rug burns! Doh, I did NOT say that did I?

Hopefully you don't feel that way after Xmas dinner Starla, with all those people there n' all. :/

Posted by: Lisa at June 8, 2009 04:36 PM

*huge grin* Well, in most houses, there's more than one rug to pick up some rug burn on. The question is really just a matter of finding a rug in a room where nobody else happens to be lying on the couch watching football and passing gas, wondering how much stuffing is left over.

Posted by: Starla Darling at June 8, 2009 04:44 PM

The passing gas thing would definitely damper the mood.

Posted by: Lisa at June 8, 2009 05:25 PM

Oh god, another pun! Damper! rofl!
But yeah, somebody on the couch flatulating wold definitely put a damper on things.
Did you know that a survey found that the two scents men found most sexy are lavender and...
Pumpkin pie?
Hmmmm, seems to me the holidays create lots more good cheer than we thought.

Posted by: Starla Darling at June 8, 2009 09:20 PM

Yea Lisa... I learned to play them licks straight from Duane too! Played along the most with the video from Fillmore 1970 and my Amer Univ cd and Pop Festival cd. Lately I've started trying to tackle some of the chops straight off the middle of Live at Fillmore East.. TOUGH STUFF!! Almost anyone you see playing it will be doin SOMETHIN wrong, even if its just the tone or feel behind the note... Any middle-man between you and Duane, and you lose somethin. (Dont Keep Me Wonderin is one of my favs... prob fav straight slide song. I <3 DREAMS!!)

But yea theres some pic in b+w of this, and this is an artists ethereal depiction of the serene place Duane takes people with his music. (havin the 'shrooms layed on thick cuz of their trademark =P)

Its neat, and a cool find we havent seen before!
Thanks Donnah!
And WAIL ON, Skydog! Keep teachin us young-pups how to hit the note through your everlasting legacy!

Surfer Joe reads over the latest developments in the thread in mute horror. How had it all gone so horribly awry? Searching for a response and finding none, at last he draws a revolver, spins the cartridge grimly, and points it at his temple. No. Honorable, perhaps, but too noisy and messy.

He slips quietly from the room, hoping no one will notice, changes his name, and moves to Branson, Missouri, where he will spend his days in obscurity, sweeping up in the Mel Tillis Theatre.

W-W-Wail On, Mel!

Posted by: Surfer Joe at June 9, 2009 08:37 AM

Joe, Joe, Joe.....it will be alright. We said we would go the gearhead route next week. Ladies, the mentioned pic with the greasy britches is the one that led to the alleged conversation. See Duane had no choice but to grab the striped pants for the crane pic. Now about the passing of gas and rug burns.....no comment!

Joe, you could always go the route of Mr. Carradine. We could have a field day with that!;)

Wail on, Skydog!

Posted by: cindy at June 9, 2009 10:03 AM

Oh Joe, don't do this! We love you, and we meant no harm! And anyway, in Branson where will you surf?
*leads Joe back to the warm, lighted circle and offers a slice of pumpkin pie to cheer him up*
And yes, next week, we will try to restrict ourselves to gear talk, unless Donnah decides to be a turd-paddler and deliberately posts a provocative pic. But you wouldn't do that to poor Joe at a time like this, would you Donnah?

Posted by: Starla Darling at June 9, 2009 11:58 AM

Ben - That's great that you play along with Duane like that. My bro has been playing along with Duane on the guitar since forever. He's pretty good but like you say - NOBODY can play like Duane!

And Surfer Joe say it ain't so! I say just have that piece of pumpkin pie & report back on Wednesday. We'll try to keep off Duane's pants. :)

Posted by: Lisa at June 9, 2009 02:40 PM

Or... *use best Tom Bodette Motel 6 voice here*
Join us for the Wednesday Duane Allman pic.
"We'll keep the pants off for ya."
Sorry, couldn't resist.
