Some lucky cat got to snap a pic from the final Fillmore show, June 26, 1971.
Wail on, Skydog!
Hurray...I'm first! If only I could have been there to hear that live..."ya'll awfully quite out there.....oh, too high" boy was he a funny guy that Duane. He has on the old gapping henley I see. The old reliable shirt.
If you ask me, which none of you did, this is the real dynamic duo....Duane & Dickey, none better.
Thank you Donnah, what would Wednesday's be without you!
Wail on, Skydog!
Posted by: cindy at June 25, 2009 11:43 AMDonnah, you're making Wednesdays manic for me. I check, then check back, over and over to catch the pic but never seem to catch you. Definately the Dynamic Duo but not the Caped Crusaders.
June of 1971, I had just finished 8th grade and didn't even own an FM radio and I wouldn't have known who Duane was or heard of the ABB. Man, did I miss the boat! We were all about solo Beatles, 3 Dog Night, The Guess Who, top 40 am radio in St Louis. I'm glad I made up for lost time.
Posted by: Willard at June 25, 2009 12:08 PMI wonder who the lucky cat was that snapped this shot? Nice pic Donnah. I'm not sure if I've seen this one before or not.
Sure would have loved to seen the ABB with Duane at the Fillmore East or anywhere for that matter. I was only 10 yrs old in '71 and although I hate to say it I wasn't really into them then. I think I was jammin' on The DeFranco Family around that time. Hey, Tony DeFranco was HOT! lol
Oh and Willard, you're from St. Louis? Do you happen to be a STL Cardinals fan? :)
Posted by: Lisa at June 25, 2009 01:54 PMCindy wins the prize for posting first! *applause, whistles, fireworks going off, confetti is thrown and underwear... Wilard! Stop that!*
In 1971, I was not even a gleam in anybody's eye, so don't feel too bad, Lisa.
Great pic. Echoing everybody so far, would've loved to be there.
I'm actually in Illinois, Lisa, Collinsville to be precise and a devote Cardinal fan.
Back in the late 60's KXOK was the radio station of choice am top forty. During summer, the local swimming pool(in Bethalto) played KXOK over the PA system, (In the summer of 66 they played Cyrkle's "Red Rubber Ball" every 15 minutes,(I now despise it greatly)) along with "Paperback Writer". By the early 70's KSHE, progressive rock station, introduced me to a different kind of music (Thank God for the 72 Buick LeSabre with our first AM/FM radio). I still didn't get into the Allman's until my brother bought the Anthology I and pounded, "Loan Me A Dime" into my head every morning before we'd go to school.
Now I get my 'Wail On' every chance I get.
Posted by: Willard at June 25, 2009 04:58 PMVery interesting Willard. That's awesome you're a devote Cardinal fan! How about that Albert Pujols?!! I was born & raised in good ol' Peoria IL & I'm still here. My dad is the main reason I'm a Cardinal fan. The first MLB game he ever saw was a Cardinal game way back in the 40's & he fell in love with them. We used to go to St. Louis every summer to catch a few games & go up in the arch & whatnot. My dad passed away in 1990 but my love for his Cardinals lives on! Go Cards!!!
That's kinda weird how your brother bought that Anthology album. Why it's weird is my brother who I've mentioned on here several times is how I came to know & love Duane Allman. He bought that first self titled ABB album probably around 1972 or '73 and then before long any other Duane Allman music he could get his hands on. Let me tell ya he has always preferred his Allman Brothers VERY loud so I couldn't help but hear them. And neither could my dad who was not as keen on them. When we moved into Peoria Heights in 1974 we had a teen telephone upstairs & when my brother would be playing his stereo & guitar real loud my dad would attempt to call the phone up there to tell him to turn the shit down but Matthew couldn't even hear it ring. LOL to the max. I'd end up having to go up there & be the messenger - under orders keep in mind. Anyway, lets thank our bro's for the Bro's!
Posted by: Lisa at June 25, 2009 06:14 PMYour Matthew and his Duane Wallman! I love that guy, and I've never even met him. And you can tell him I said so, if you can make it sound scary. :)
I'll thank my ex-boyfriend (named after DA, at least that's what he claimed) for indoctrinating me. It's about the only thing I can honestly thank him for now.
I worked at Music-Service, a music store in Jax Beach during the summer, 1970. Saw the beginnings of ABB at the Jax Beach Coliseum, the Forest Inn, the Scene, and Wolfson Ballpark. Other bands around that time/place were Second Coming, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Dru Lombar/friends, and Barry Harwood/friends.
Everyone of 'em DID "skin it back and let it eat", back then!
only half way through your archives, but i had to stop and say thanks to donnah for all the ABB history. duane and berry already passed when i got my eat a peach album with my ten "free" LP's from a record club.
question: any live recordings of black hearted woman with the original brothers? that was and is one of my all time favorites...anyone know why it wasn't part of their regular set?
wail on donnah and friends.
Willard if there was picture of Duane in a cape....I think Donnah would have shown it to us since she is the DA picture queen! Now I am pretty sure I have seen a picture of little bro in a cape...during the lace period I think. What does that say about him? I'm not real sure;D

Posted by: cindy at June 26, 2009 12:59 PMThanks Starla. I'll give him your message. I know for sure he'd like you. Especially with your imaginative sense of humor!
I've told him that I talk about him on here. He just says, "What are you, nuts?". lol
Posted by: Lisa at June 26, 2009 01:42 PMYep, Cindy, it was Babru who wore the cape in the family and it was indeed during the lace period.
Posted by: Donnah at June 26, 2009 02:06 PMSorry about the double post...I don't know what happened. Good weekend to all!
Posted by: cindy at June 26, 2009 03:26 PMYou too, Cindy, have a great weekend. Me, I'm going to do some swimming. (In a pool! Ina bikini! Getcher mind outta the gutter!)

Posted by: csason at June 26, 2009 06:46 PMLol, Owen! Still got an itchy shutter finger?
Posted by: Starla Darling at June 26, 2009 07:18 PMI was 13 at the time and the Bros. came through Tampa on this tour. The night of the show I was begging a fishing buddy to go in so I could see the show.
No Dice. The tarpon we were after were more important to him -- he's a pro guide now -- and as with the four or so stories I have like this, I had no way of knowing that a brush with greatness was slipping through my hands.
We didn't catch anything that evening, but I will never forget the night, and what could have been.
The first time I heard of the Allman Brother's band was on late night radio out of St Louis, Mo.
Wasnt anything but am pop in Iowa where I grew up. I was pretty hip, bought all the new stuff by everybody. Had over 1,000 lps collected over the years.
In summer I would listen to the blues cats on that far away late night Beaker Street radio show! I heard Hot "Lanta and In memory of Elizabeth Reed and was hooked big time.
I got my first ABB album free through Rolling Stone Magazine. They sent me a free copy for subcribing. It was their just released masterpiece, Live at the Fillmore East lp.
I never misse a RS issue. Every 2 weeks like clock work I would walk about 12 blocks to the
newstand and buy it. (wish I still had my original picture by Annie Leibowitz of Duane and Gregg. The one where they are asleep in the bakc of the cab) :< I paid only $5.00 for a 8x10 from the original negative. Bet its worth a pretty penny now! Long story about why I dont have it, it wasnt on purpose thats for sure, nor were losing all those lps with all those memories!
I had just graduated high school and got my first job. Right after hearing ABB, I started playing guitar in earnest! I ordered a brand new lefty Gibson SG standard, not knowing at the time that Duane used one by then. Got me a coricidin bottle, dumped the pills and soaked the label off and played and played! I still have that bottle, Im proud to say!
It wasnt long until I had their first Lps too. I never got to see Duane live as he died that fall. They came to Des Moines that fall after he died but I didnt get to go.
I still havent ever seen them live. Something always happens. I have had tickets in hand, hurricanes and all sorts of strange things have happened to prevent me from going. Now, sidelined in a wheelchair, no way I will get to go.
But, heck; Play the blues anyway! Have a hellava safe July 4 weekend yall. Play some ABB for Duane n Wail on Skydog!
Posted by: Sheila at July 1, 2009 02:44 PMSheila, I'm sure I speak for all of us when I say, if we possibly could, any one of us would gladly push you in your chair across the country so you could catcha live ABB show, and be happy to do it too. :)
Hurricanes be damned!
Starla you are O so kind, and I bet you would too! I am so proud to have you as a co-conspirator on Florida-Cracker! More fun that a barrel of monkeys! Dont know why anyone would think having a barrel of monkeys would be fun! dang, toddlers are bad enough! lol
Posted by: sheila at July 2, 2009 12:32 PMI often say "as much fun as a shoebox full of kittens" cause when something is as fun as that, it's VERY fun!
