Oooooooooh Ben is first! =P
This is quite a shocker, Im usually at least 2 days late! XD

This pic reminds me of the story of Duane always wearing the guitar, even when he had to go pee, careful not to pee on the strap.

HAHAHA! I need some dedication to playing that much.. then maybe I would be able to rip some good licks!

Thanks for the cake Donnah, yum!
Keep on a-wailin!

Hey.. if this is a forum, shouldn't we elect officers ??

I thought so...

IN that case, I elect Starla.

Posted by: csason at October 29, 2009 07:10 AM

Oh thank you Owen! But what have you elected me to?
I think Donnah should be elected President, no doubt about that.
Maybe I can be President of the Girlie Division?

Posted by: Starla Darling at October 29, 2009 08:59 AM

Happy Birthday Donnah! Hope you have a wonderful day! Pop a cork and celebrate! :>

On a sadder note, take a moment to remember Duane Allman today. He passed 38 years ago today. October 29, 1971. I cant believe its been so long!

Younger girls and guys enjoy your youth! The older you get the faster the years go by! It doesn't seem that long ago. I remember sitting in front of the tv on that Oct night watching the 6:00 pm news on NBC. A picture of Duane flashed on the screen and to my horror the words, "Founding member of the popular rock band The Allman Brothers Band, Duane Howard Allman died today from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident in Macon, Ga. He was 24.

My world came crashing down! Not Duane, Not Duane Allman, I cried!!! Sometimes, dear skydoggies it still hurts to think about it.

But, life goes on, and those who are living should celebrate life and live it to the fullest.

Enjoy your day Donnah, and drink a toast to the memory of Duane Allman and play some ABB tunes at the Bday bash. That would make ole Duane smile I'm sure!

Oh Sheila! (((hugs)))
Live it up, everybody!

RIP Duane.

Remembering Skydog today and everyday! God bless Duane Allman.

All this talk about birthdays and deadly anniversaries has taken the focus off of the electoral process, and it's clear that some of the
voter's are going to be dis-enfranchised... bla bla..

I'm glad Donnah keeps remembering Duane every big ol Wednesday, and sometimes her birthday precludes
Duane's expiration anniversary, sure..but you have to take the good with the sad..

Happy Birthday Donnah, even if it was close to Duane's wreck day !

Posted by: csason at October 29, 2009 02:46 PM

I used to play my guitar in the bathroom. Good for amplification when you have no amp.

Posted by: penrod59 at October 29, 2009 02:56 PM

Happy Birthday D.

Thanks for all that you do.

Regarding the tile bathroom, Leon Russell and Marc Benno (The Asylum Choir) recorded an entire album with Leon's piano in the bathroom to use the unique acoustics.

Posted by: Paco Malo at October 29, 2009 03:43 PM

Didn't somebody from some band or other die because of playing guitar in the bathtub? Electric guitar, that is. IF it's true they must really have got a charge out of it.
Owen, Donnah's b-day may come close to Duane's wreck day, but how do you think I feel? My b-day's September 11! And my 21st was in 2001, supposed to be your last have-a-total-ball birthday till people start throwing you gag parties with black flowers and black ribbons when you turn fifty. lol
Back to punching chad, everybody! I want this election to be a fair and honest process, you know!

Posted by: Starla Darling at October 29, 2009 03:47 PM

A late Happy Birthday, Donnah, and thanks for all you do here. Starla, sorry the maniacs messed up your day...

I'll be going through Macon tomorrow, and I'll stop by Hillcrest, wave at my old house near the turnoff there from Pio Nono, and spare a moment to think of H.D. Allman, a motorcycle, a lumber truck, and all we lost there in 1971. I dream about that place all the time. I'll try to get by Berry's site as well.

Posted by: Surfer Joe at October 30, 2009 05:18 AM

Damn Starla.. you're just a youngin' !

I'd say I'm extremely sad the twin towers took a dump on your birthday, but I am sure there were others who had a wors-ter day !

If it was me, I'd be saying "Hey, I'm glad I didn't hatch some crazy 21 year old vision about visiting Noo Yawk on my birthday !"

Posted by: csason at October 30, 2009 08:02 AM

Yeah, I know, I've really got nothing to be sulky over; after all I'm alive and nobody I know was in NYC that day.
Joe, isn't Berry's site right near Duane's? As in walking distance? I thought I read that somewhere.

Posted by: Starla Darling at October 30, 2009 08:33 AM

They were side by side the last time I was there..in 1976.

Posted by: csason at October 30, 2009 01:27 PM

Starla, I bet you're thinking of Keith Relf who was with the Yardbirds, but I think the bathtub story is one of those myths. I thought I read somewhere that he was found dead in the basement of his house that he was turning into a recording studio & something about his floor not being properly grounded or his guitar being unearthed or something of that nature. I'm sure it was quite a shock to all who knew him.

Posted by: Lisa at October 30, 2009 02:23 PM

Yeah, I know, I've really got nothing to be sulky over; after all I'm alive and nobody I know was in NYC that day.

You know me.

I was there.......

Donna, Happy Birthday to you.
Please come to a Birthday Celebration for Duane in Macon Ga. Sunday, Nov. 22--Central City Park. Noon to 5:00PM SKYDOG 63... Duane would have been 63 this Nov. 20. see: www.skydogmacon.com for all the details. Ya'll Come!

Posted by: gwesley at October 30, 2009 02:32 PM

Lisa, I think Keith Relf is the one. That was the buzz, anyway!
I know there was a French singer who died because he was chaning a lightbulb over his bathtub... while standing in said tub in water!
I feela French lightbulb-changing joke coming on...

Posted by: Starla Darling at October 30, 2009 03:41 PM

Starla, I was never conscious of exactly where Berry's crash site was when I lived there 20 years ago. I didn't know where the Big House was, either- just a few sites that were pointed out to me (their first apartment on College Street being one), which (amazingly) proved to be accurate.

But- from having lived there for four years- now that I know generally where everything happened, I think the proximity of Duane's and Berry's accidents is greatly exaggerated in most accounts, especially those that say "three blocks" or whatever. When you turn off Pio Nono onto Hillcrest as Duane did, (I briefly lived in about the fifth house down on what would have been Duane's left) I want to say that you have at least five or six longish blocks to go to get to the fatal intersection.

So until I check it out, I'd only feel safe saying that they were within two miles. If I can get by there tonight, I'll report back.

"Cross roads...will you ever let him go...."

Posted by: Surfer Joe at October 30, 2009 04:52 PM

Thanks Joe, you're a doll.

Posted by: Starla Darling at October 30, 2009 05:13 PM

Just returned; spent a good deal of time patrolling both sites on foot and in the car last night at about 9 P.M. and again tonight (on the way back through) at about 2 A.M. Much to report...watch this space. I had some things very wrong but now it's all straight. I'll probably write a full account under the new picture Wednesday if that's o.k. with our muchly-esteemed hostess. Still creepin' out...I sure know what I'll be dreaming about for a week or two.

Starla D, not sure if I'm a doll per se but I'm highly collectible. There's only one of me in circulation, and for now, the hair and teeth are still real. Someone make an offer!

Posted by: Surfer Joe at November 1, 2009 04:34 AM

Are you huggable too? Do you come with extra outfits? That's always a plus in a doll.
Did you have any supernatural emanations at the crash sites, like an icy finger run down your spine, or a ghostly whisper in your ear?
Can't wait for the write-up!

Posted by: Starla Darling at November 1, 2009 07:07 AM

Sigh...

A few days late and a dollar short which I regret.

Happy Birthday Donnah!O!

PS... BOO!!!

(yes, that's late too ;p)

Posted by: Gmac at November 1, 2009 09:43 AM

Well, surely somewhere in the world it's still Halloween. :)

Posted by: Starla Darling at November 1, 2009 10:00 AM

Starla, my only extra features are that I can say about fifty thousand words and phrases, and since I hit forty, if you squeeze my stomach you'll need to change me.

Emanations: I tried to tune in on that both times- spoke to Duane and Berry, even- and they ain't there. You wouldn't be, either- two really depressing locations. The first night I felt an overwhelming sense of nothing, only to discover that I had gone to the wrong place- one street short of Duane's site (and I couldn't find Berry's). The second night I went back through on an impulse to try a theory that I had the wrong side of Napier in mind for Berry, and therefore the two sites really could be that close together.

After re-driving Duane's route, I turned around and drove the truck's, to see what he saw. It was then that I discovered that just one street further down was Bartlett- of course that was it! I remembered now. I had been looking at Hillcrest and Inverness. Why was I thinking of Inverness? Then it hit me- Berry's was at Inverness. So I re-studied the Duane site from both approaches, learned some things, and then cut over to Napier. There was the big bend at Inverness. Unmistakable- this was it. Other than that fatal bend of the road- just as described- Berry's site was utterly different than I had imagined. Both places are completely unchanged. And I had it all wrong- they are about two thousand feet apart, tops. I think I measured either three or four tenths of a mile by the most direct line, but wasn't sure because it was so dark it was hard to even read my guage.

What hovers there is a really terrible sense of gloom, but I can't tell if it's from Duane and Berry, or I brought it with me, or it's just the depressing area, which is sort of withering and declining even as Mercer U gets razed and rebuilt a few blocks away. My neighborhood had been really cheerful, but it hasn't aged well, and as you go down the hill it gets sadder and more run down.

Duane's site (Hillcrest and Bartlett) was four tenths of a mile down from my old house, and if Berry had stayed straight on Napier past Inverness he'd have been at the house I moved to Hillcrest from after my senior year in about a minute, tops. I had forgotten that Napier turns to Coleman about three blocks later, and I lived at 1625 Coleman, maybe a mile from Berry' spot.

Of course my own set of ghosts were attacking me from every angle, everywhere I went, every time I got out of the car. This happened here, that happened there...really specific, insignificant little stuff that I couldn't believe I even remembered. And Duane and Berry happened right on the fringes of it all. The whole ABB story had played out right there, right before I was there. Jaimoe was still around then, and I knew him. I'm sure I saw Candace a million times and didn't know her.

The two sites have an unbearable sense of unworthiness of their enormous significance. Nothing of note should ever have happened at either place until the end of time. Whenever the inevitable film is made, the location scout will take the director and the producer to both spots, and they'll say "Oh, no, this won't do!"

Posted by: Surfer Joe at November 1, 2009 04:02 PM

Wow, Joe! You had a powerful experience, even if the sites themselves were underwhelming in their ordinariness. (Hey, maybe Duane and Berry were watching you the whole time and quietly snickering about your geographical mishaps and wanderings. Sounds in character, doesn't it?)
Anyway, I'd give you a squeeze right now but I remember what you said would happen, and since I've made a vow never to change a baby's pants I have no intention of chaning a 40yo surfer's either. lol

Posted by: Starla Darling at November 1, 2009 07:36 PM

I remember driving by there..and "unworthiness" is
accurate..we actually never figured out where we were..probably. It was a while back..and I was drunk and stoned.

Those *kinds* of spots are the worst.

About five or six years ago, right in front of the oldest downtown McDonald's in Winter Haven..I mean, it is a quiet area..or it's supposed to be..
Five kids in a car were 'racing'..actually, they *were* doing about 50 (it's a 35 mph zone) and the
driver lost control and hit a utility area..
The car caught on fire..and they were all trapped.

It was awful, they have a bona-fide memorial there now with all their pictures in granite.

I'd like to drive up to the graveside again, I hear it has been altered to some extent since 1975, the last time I was there.

I'm wiped out.. night night.

Posted by: csason at November 2, 2009 08:39 AM

csason, Duane's and Berry sites really need some kind of a marker. Probably just one of those big green State Of Georgia signs, though I don't know if rock and roll has produced many of those.

To add to the weirdness, I Googled the intersection for Duane's site yesterday (Hillcrest/Bartlett) and there was a shooting there a year or so ago, exactly on the spot.

I do have some more to report- guess I'll try to post under the next picture tomorrow, after giving it some time so I don't hijack the thread.
