If You Leave Me Now I'll Take Away The Biggest Part Of You

Muzzamill Hassan was all about bridges. The other day he made alterations to the span connecting his wife's head to her chest:

Police say an upstate New York man concerned about the negative portrayal of Muslims in the media beheaded his wife after she filed for divorce.

Muzzammil Hassan is charged with murdering his wife, Aasiya Hassan. Police say she had an order of protection against her husband and he had been kicked out of the house they shared in Orchard Park, near Buffalo.

They accuse the 44-year-old Hassan of cutting off his wife's head at the TV station where he launched his Bridges TV network in 2004. In an AP interview, he said he hoped the network would balance negative portrayals of Muslims following the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks.

Hassan surrendered at the police station after his wife's death.

Again we see an infuriating lack of assimilation in the immigrant populace. An American would have shot her.

Judge Karma Makes Ruling In DUI Manslaughter Case

Defendant expected to appeal for eternity:

A Pasadena[, Texas] man charged last year in what authorities said was a fatal drunken driving wreck was killed this week, apparently by a drunken driver.

Nicholas Hernandez, 25, was a passenger in a black Ford Mustang that struck a light pole in the 9100 block of the Gulf Freeway service road and rolled several times Thursday. He was ejected from the car.

Police believe the driver, Jose Resendez, 27, was drinking and expect him to be charged with intoxication manslaughter.

If convicted of intoxication manslaughter, Resendez faces anything from two years’ probation up to 20 years in prison.

Harris County Assistant District Attorney Brent Mayr said Hernandez was arrested after the Aug. 3, wreck which killed James Kelleher, 26, and his passenger, 23-year-old Suzanne Penland, who were hit head-on as they drove south on Texas 288.

Mayr said Hernandez was driving a Chevrolet Impala the wrong way on the highway and had a blood alcohol concentration of .30, more than three times the legal limit, when he hit the two friends who were in a Buick LeSabre.

Hernandez was convicted of driving while intoxicated in 2002 and again in 2003. Because a third DWI would be a felony, Mayr said Hernandez was charged in last year’s wreck with felony murder, which carries a sentence ranging from probation to 99 years or life in prison. He had been released from jail on $100,000 bond.

Mayr said he was going to ask jurors to sentence Hernandez to life in prison.

Felony murder is a charge that alleges that death occurred as a result of a felony, such as arson or burglary, but in this case, driving while intoxicated for the third time.

My Name Is Hurl

On Monday a prandial predilection that boiled over into dining discord led to an encounter with the police for one elderly N. Ft. Myers man. Things got hot when instead of a requested and anticipated dish of lima beans, a gentleman whose name rhymes with "Hurl" was instead brought a bowl of cereal with fruit -- most likely raisins-- swimming in Ensure. "Hurl" dashed the bowl to the floor in protest, prompting Mrs. Hurl to get on the horn to John Law.

Mr. Cracker and I feel that law enforcement intervention should have taken place only if Hurl's behavior occurred in reaction to a bean substitution; say, pintos for limas, as that would have just been unreasonable. What is your own opinion?

Old People Are Stubborn II

I've fallen and I don't want to get up:

Sheriff's officers have arrested an 82-year-old man after his wife died on the floor of their home, apparently about 10 weeks after she fell out of bed and was unable to get up.

John Klein was arrested for investigation of second-degree manslaughter after he called 911 on Monday to report that his 73-year-old wife Pia had no pulse.

Klein told Spokane County sheriff's Detective Jim Dresback that his wife of 52 years fell out of bed around last Thanksgiving, Dresback said in court papers filed Tuesday.

According to that account, Klein had been working outside, came in and found his wife lying next to the bed in the doorway of the master bathroom. He said she cried out in pain and told him to leave her alone when he tried to help her up.

After that, Klein said he left her lying on her left side on the floor for the next 10 weeks, bringing her food and water, giving her medications and cleaning her but did not summon any medical aid. The woman had no significant medical problems, Klein told detectives. It was not clear what medications he gave her.

Klein's bond was set at $200,000 at his initial court appearance Tuesday. Klein told the judge, in his words, "I don't consider it to be my fault. She did not want help." It was not immediately known if he was represented by a lawyer.

Klein told Dresback the couple have an adult daughter who lives in North Carolina and normally talks with them by phone every other weekend. Asked if the daughter spoke to her mother after the fall, Klein said his wife had told him to tell the daughter she was sick.

When Klein was asked whether his wife had asked him to summon help for her, "he looked down for about five or six seconds, then said, 'No,"' the detective wrote. In the affidavit, the detective alleged Klein was criminally negligent in failing to summon medical help.

Klein reportedly told the detective he thought his wife would eventually get up and start walking on her own, adding he told her to exercise while she was lying on the floor.

Congrats to the Kleins on 52 years! And everybody get the old folks an i-phone and Internet for Christmas -- the idea of frequent time-stamped photos never sounded so appealing.

Haleigh Cummings

I've been following the story of the missing Putnam County girl. Those on the Court TV boards and First Coast chatter have been incredibly vicious towards the father -- as people were towards Mark Lunsford, Ed Smart, etc. So many people with opinions on how someone in the worst moment of his life should act.

UPDATE:
An account of the first night's search that led to the railroad tracks:

Deputies found a footprint in the dirt, and dogs picked up a scent leading away from the home of Haleigh Cummings, but investigators didn't suspect foul play on the day she disappeared, according to the police report released late Friday by the Putnam County Sheriff's Office.

Haleigh Cummings has been missing since Monday. Now, authorities believe she's been abducted.

Deputies R. Nelson and Bridges responded to Haleigh's home at 202 Green Drive in reference to the report of a missing five year old child.

The deputies arrived to find Ronald Cummings, Haleigh's father, visibly upset in the driveway.

Cummings told the arriving deputies his girlfriend told him his daughter disappeared. Mr. Cummings said he didn't know what kind of clothing Haleigh had on, and all he knew was "the back door was standing open."

Ronald Cummings repeatedly said someone took his daughter, and according to the police report. he said, "when I find him, I'll kill him." Investigators said Cummings mentioned he had a 9 mm Beretta inside his home, and he said whomever had his child, he would "shoot them through the back window of the patrol car."

Investigators said due to his emotional state, Ronald Cummings was unable to provide any useful information at that moment.

Investigators then spoke with Misty Croslin, the 17-year-old girlfriend of Ronald Cummings who put Haleigh to bed Monday evening.

Croslin told investigators she put Haleigh and her 3-year-old brother in Croslin's bed at 8 p.m., and that both were still in bed when the teenager went to bed a few hours later at 10:30 p.m.

Croslin said she woke up to get a drink of water at 3 a.m. and noticed Haleigh had disappeared. Croslin said she ran around the home frantically looking for Haleigh when she noticed the back door open. Croslin told detectives she felt certain she locked the door before going to bed.

Croslin said Ronald Cummings arrived at home five minutes after she noticed Haleigh missing. Croslin said her boyfriend told her to call 911 immediately.

Ronald Cummings' mother, Teresa Neves, arrived at the house. She told detectives her son called her shortly after he learned his daughter disappeared.

Deputies did their own search of the house for Haleigh but didn't find her.

The missing person's unit with the Putnam County Sheriff's Office responded to the house.

A canine officer followed a track that lead directly out the back door of the home and down a wooded path.

Deputies found what appeared to be a small footprint in the dirt, but noted Haleigh's shoes were still inside her home.

The tracking dog led deputies to a pond and back to Green Drive, Haleigh's street. Deputies looked inside a small building with a door that had been left open. Nothing was inside.

The track continued north past Haleigh's home down Monroe Avenue and onto Buchan Circle, which looped back to Monroe Avenue. The canine officer continued to track down Buffalo Bluff Road but lost the track at the railroad crossing.

Investigators are now treating Haleigh's disappearance as an abduction.
